If you expect former President Donald Trump to fulfill even one campaign promise he is making for 2024, you would have to explain why he is openly mocking the idea that he could fulfill the promise that defined his entire candidacy in 2016. The core promise of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was that he would build a wall on the southern border and make Mexico pay for it. This is what defined his tough-on-illegal-immigration approach, and he even mocked detractors who said that he would not or could not possibly do it. As late as October 2020, less than one month before he lost reelection, Trump was saying that Mexico was indeed paying for the border wall.
Now, sitting on the outside and asking GOP voters to give him the nomination once again, Trump admits it was all a charade. In Iowa, Trump said that “we all had a lot of fun” but “there was no legal instrument” to make Mexico pay for the wall. That thing he promised time and again, both as a candidate and all the way to his last days as president, was never possible. Not only that, according to Trump, you are a “loser” if you point out that Mexico never paid for the wall that Trump promised it would pay for.
It was all a sham. Trump knew, if not when he was a candidate then certainly when he was president, that he would not follow through on it. He kept up the charade until he was booted from office. Now, he thinks you’re a loser if you ever believed it, but he wants to tell you all about the new campaign promises he is making. Sure, he lied to you about the biggest promise he made last time, but would he really be lying to you again?
This charade is the problem with Trump’s entire campaign. Just about every promise he makes now comes with the nagging question of why he didn’t do it the first time. Do you really believe he is going to “shatter the deep state” when he already had four years to do it and didn’t even try? Now, what promise are you willing to believe from Trump when he is openly telling you that the biggest promise he made during his entire first campaign and four-year term was always a sham?
You are showing your ignorance. I’ve been here since 2000 and participated in many worthwhile discussions. The entire of tenor of FR has changed in the past two years with many more crass comments, personal attacks, foul language, etc. And Chris Robinson wonders why the fund raising is facing challenges. What was once a place for robust, logical debate is now the home for playground-level taunting and name calling.
Article is heavy on narrating what Trump supposedly said, but light on actually quoting Trump so that we can verify its narration is not BS.
Actually no.....the biggest sham was the “Stop the Steal” grift.
How much did you give? Do we know where the money went? How many influencers have been bought with that money? How many attorneys have lined their pockets with our money??
Anyone with any sense knew that Mexico wasn’t going to pay for the wall, there are those who believed that rhetoric
A poorly written article.
250 million?? Are you still giving??
Zachary appears to be 26.
I agree that the tenor has changed, partly due to the many people that were active when we signed up having passed since then.
Where have you been all this time to build up your cred?

We would have saved money, which is in a way making Mexico pay for it. Plus, taxing renumerations and deny Mexico the money, paying for the wall.
Trump kept more promises than he made.
And he’s right - if you thought Mexico was actually going to get an invoice for wall construction, you’re a sap.
Trump withheld and re-negotiated handouts for all countries down south which is why they jumped in lockstep to mitigate illegals such as at the Guatemala/Mexico border.
Also, keeping illegals in Mexico, instead of just letting them into the US to get handouts, probably saved us even more than the RINO majority congress allowed to be spent on the wall.
The man did all he could. He was not , for all the rumors to the contrary , a dictator. His record of promises kept embarrasses every other President going back decades. When I hear Trump speak passionately about something I know he going to go full bore trying to get it done.
Hell, no other politicians even acknowledge that it exists.
Anybody with half a brain knew Mexico wasn’t going to pay outright for any part of the wall. Trump’s main campaign promise was to build the wall, and he did. I voted for him because of his plan to build the wall, not make Mexico pay for it. But, in a way though, I believe that when the wall was built, Mexico ended up losing monetarily on the cartel drug and trafficking trade being cut back, and not having as many illegals sending U.S. dollars back to Mexico.
DeSantis droolers use this crap to denigrate Trump. I ran into one the other day.

He's a 2016 Cruzer who called his opponents "trump humpers", and smeared Free Republic as "Trump Republic".
In other words, a NeverTrump POS that just floated back to the top of the toilet bowl.
Three seemingly pretty good Supreme Court picks was not a sham. Even the great Ronald Reagan failed by comparison: in addition the great Justice Scalia, Reagan inflicted Sandra Day O’Connor and Anthony Kennedy upon us. Even if Trump had been unable to accomplish anything else, his Supreme Court picks alone made him a great president.
Hey Mental Midget Zach, compare the number of illegals entering the country under Trump vs. under Bidung. Compare the number of terrorists on the terrorist watch list who crossed the border under Trump vs those under Bidung. You Fing virtue signaling morons think we are as stupid as you are.
Not directly pay for it, indirectly. By controlling the number of illegals, it would have meant less money sent back to Mexico, and more money staying int the US, more jobs, and tax revenue at the expense of Mexico.
The people arguing this just doesn’t understand economics.
Trying to recall one instance of surrender throughput the last 7 years. I’ve been under the impression it’s been a battle the entire time.
WTF?! The MSM is in full brain washing mode.🙄
