That he might have done this and some are making a big deal of it just exposes the superficiality of much of our political culture. Stephen Douglas was a foot shorter than Abraham Lincoln. I am not aware that Douglas did anything to make up for that deficiency. He was referred to as “the Little Giant”, which was not an insult, but a reflection of the man’s substance.
