An ice hockey star who is believed to have taken a blade to his throat in a horrific injury during a game has died aged 29, his family have said.
Adam Johnson's injury was so horrific it forced the game to be abandoned and left traumatised fans in tears.
The Minnesota-born athlete is believed to have been stuck in the neck by an ice hockey blade in a freak accident at the match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers at Utilita Arena Sheffield this evening.
His mother Kari took to social media to share her heartbreak this morning - telling friends: 'I lost half of my heart today.'
And his club said they were 'truly devastated' by the news - paying tribute to 'a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him'.
The Elite Ice Hockey League said they were 'heartbroken' to confirm the 'deeply upsetting' news - and have postponed all games scheduled to take place today.
Devastated fans have taken to social media to share their grief for the Minnesota-born star, using the hashtag 'sticksoutfor47' - a reference to the number Mr Johnson wore.
Around 8,000 fans saw the nightmare collision last night before the game was quickly stopped and screens were brought onto the pitch to protect the players involved. The match was later abandoned.
Sharing the news, his club said: 'The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night.
'The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.
'Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing.'

Wow, that’s an obvious high kick. Zero reason to do that other than to cause grave bodily injury, considering that there’s a sharpened blade firmly attached to each foot. Murder possibly, or manslaughter at the very least. This was no accident.
Yea that definitely looks like a purposeful kick. The small bump with the other guy prior certainly wasn’t enough contact to send a leg flying up to head-level!
I had my kids wear neck guards during youth hockey. They protested a little, but not much.
Yea, right, he was watching that other skater all the time in order throw a skate at his throat while he initiated his check on player one.
Stop it with your nonsense.....
Maybe the skate “slasher” was really a hockey Ninja.....Who woulda thought.......
Watch the video.
Read up on the perp’s history on the ice.
The perp lifted his leg and slashed his opponent in the throat with the blade on his skate.
The perp is black.
The vic is white.
And the UK enemedia is having a pity party for the perp.
ECHL announces fine, suspension
...The ECHL on Sunday announced that Brampton’s Matt Petgrave has been suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #963, Brampton at Kalamazoo, on April 7.
Petgrave is fined and suspended under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as a result of his actions at 3:46 of the third period...
Petgrave fined for Abuse of Officials
Here's one from 2010..
Pettgrave should be up on manslaughter charges, or whatever the equivalent is in the UK.
And there should be serious questions asked and answered about why he had been allowed to continue playing.
That was murder. No question in my mind it was murder. The poor man bled out so quick he didn’t have time to realize he was dying.
Oh wow, I wish I didn’t watch that. Brutal all that blood.
Updated article:
I was gonna let this go, but I just watched the video again a few times. They player he supposedly checked didn't even wobble when they passed each other. They didn't even make contact.
The only nonsense spouted here is by you.
Yes. This was no “freak accident.” The high-kick to the neck looks quite intentional. The player who did this should be charged with murder2 or manslaughter.
Brutal!
So shove it.....

Sounds like a pissing contest to me, bro. You're the kind who, once he decides he believes something, won't ever let it go. Despite any evidence. So, a waste of time.
When they come out with some closer video and charges on that guy you can come back here and apologize.
I just know you will.
