We may never know why this long-lost civilization, using an advanced, vanished technology, chose to carve smiley faces on a river bottom.
Let’s face it, we have to take this discovery at face value. They were faced with nothing to do but save face.
So on the face of it, that seems the most likely reason for the faces.

Africa has their race. Asia has their race. Europe has its race. American natives seem to share Asian DNA. So, do you think there was another race from the Americas that perhaps no longer exists?
That was my first thought....like the hunger stones in Europe.

Africa has at least two races, Mediterranean and Sub-Sahara.
Asia has at least two, the Indians and the Oriental.
And are you including the South Pacific in Asia? Because you are going to have to add another two. Islanders and Aborigines.
And those are just the main races. Once you start bringing in the smaller groups, the Ainu for example you get a whole bunch more.
Indo-European women are hot. Just thought I’d toss that in the mix.
At the risk of being pedantic, there are only 3 actual races-Caucasian, Asian and Black-and they started mixing together probably 10’s of 1000’s of years ago, so there haven’t been any “pure races” since long before any historical record.
Neanderthals were a 4th race that got absorbed/died out more than 20,000 years ago-they don’t seem to have had enough people to maintain a good birthrate, probably from isolation and inbreeding early on because they were mostly isolated in cold places in the mountains of Europe and Asia-but they did breed with Caucasians and Asians before they faded out-that’s why we have 2-4-5% of their DNA-so we are them-but Blacks from Africa have none-guess they never got to Africa...
Mediterranean, Sub-Saharan, Pacific Islanders, Aborigines, etc are not “races”. They are mixed-race ethnic groups-so are Native Americans and so were the Ainu of Japan. So are people from Siberia and most of Europe that borders Asia-they are called Eurasians even today. I’m Hispanic-not a race-it is an ethnic group-racially speaking, I’m mostly Caucasian like most people of European/near Asian ancestry.
All that many races s*** is just racist garbage with no basis in science made to divide people-we are all just humans, and all mixed up since before people were into that racist stuff-maybe 20,000 year or so...
They appear to be a multi-faceted society.
The amount of Caucasian DNA that Native Americans had before Europeans first came over here to colonize, whenever that was-varies from tribe to tribe-Alaskans have the least-the Cherokee have the most, according to ancient DNA studies done. some South American/Central American Natives have Black DNA, but S America is not all that far from Africa. They are heavy on the Asian DNA from Japan, China, etc too...
