I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the five hundred ninety sixth day of the war.

Day 597: Oct 13

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Avdiivka direction.

Here, Russian forces continued offensive operations with the goal of taking Avdiivka into a pocket.

When it comes to the northern part of the region, Russian territorial gains turned out to be much smaller than Russian sources initially claimed, and so far, it seems like Russian forces have not crossed the rails. If we look closer, we can see that based on the recently released geolocated footage, the fighting is still taking place in the field between Krasnohorivka and the main Ukrainian fortification.

Russian sources published a video showing how multiple Russian tanks are operating near Krasnohorivka and are trying to undermine the first line of defense by unleashing high-explosive shells on Ukrainian fortifications prior to deploying infantry. The first video published by Ukrainians shows how one such tank with infantry was shot just 50 meters in front of the Ukrainian trenches, but the Russians still decided to flee. The second video shows the destruction of the Russian armored personnel carrier just 200 m north of the tank in the previous video.

The freshest video from the region only shows how a couple of armored vehicles deploy the infantry, they immediately get hit, and the damaged vehicles drive away, leaving the wounded infantry in the grass. So, the fighting is still taking place in front of the rails, and as fighters from 110 Mechanized Brigade reported, Russians did not capture any fortifications, implying that this position is still under Ukrainian control.

When it comes to the attack on Terrikon, recently released geolocated footage shows dozens of pieces of burning Russian equipment in front of it. Moreover, today, Russian media started gradually backtracking their claims of control of the Terrikon and reported that Ukrainians conducted a counterattack, pushed Russians out of it, and that, for now, the area is in the grey zone. But Ukrainian sources reported that there were no counterattacks because the Terrikon was never taken. So, the Russian offensive effort north of Avdiivka did not bring any significant results.

Part of the reason why the Russian offensive here failed is that a Ukrainian sabotage group somehow got inside the Russian-controlled territories and blew up the bridge that Russians used to transfer reinforcements. The explosion also damaged 2 trucks, 1 tank, 1 howitzer, and 1 armored personnel carrier.

And Russian analysts already claimed that the pace of Russian advance had slowed down because Russians started focusing on “quality” attacks after Russian forces endured initial high equipment losses, so the additional destruction of the crucial supply line threatens to undermine the Russian offensive in this area completely. In order to prevent Ukrainians from exploiting the decreased intensity of attacks, Russians started using incendiary munitions to keep Ukrainians inside the shelters.

In the meantime, Ukrainians are amplifying the damage and preventing Russian reinforcement from getting to the front by striking the rear positions. In one such attack, Ukrainians destroyed 1 armored personnel carrier, 1 truck, and up to 30 troops.

When it comes to the southern part of the region, the situation is relatively the same – after Russians captured the first tree line in front of Vodiane during the first day of the offensive operation, Russians struggled to develop their offensive further.

Over the last 3 days, Ukrainian fighters from 53 Mechanized Brigade have released countless videos of Russian attempts to cross the fields, all of which ended up with the complete destruction of the Russian assault units. The ground here is even less favorable for Russians because they essentially have to cross 8 km in the open fields in the lowlands before they can even attempt to storm the next tree line. That is why around 40% of videos of the destruction of the Russian assault units come from Vodiane, and 20 more % come from Pisky.

Overall, Ukrainians showed that they were prepared to face a massive and unexpected Russian offensive operation. At this time, it is clear the Russians have completely lost momentum and do not know how to overcome the Ukrainian resistance. In the meantime, according to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian losses once again surpassed 1000 soldiers, 25 tanks, and 50 armored fighting vehicles per day, which is the highest in a very long time.

Russia has lost 1000 soldiers killed and dozens of tanks and armored vehicles destroyed in the third day of the battle of Avdiivka. Russian forces made almost little to no ground again today, showing that the offensive is not making any gains for the high losses.

The Russian patrol ship Pavel Derzhavin was confirmed damaged today with videos showing visible damage. The Russian government has also confirmed the claim.

Israel is still bombarding the Gaza strip, while IDF forces are moving in place along the border area. Hamas is still conducting massive artillery campaign, but the IAF seems to be silencing this rapidly.

Flaming Conservative: "Give it up, Rev; Ukraine is NOT going to win.

OK, so let's look at these claims about who is winning.

  1. First, in terms of Vlad the Invader's original goals, Ukraine won that war in the first few weeks.
You remember when Zelenskyy told Biden he needed more ammunition, not a ride, and you remember the 40 mile long Russian convoy destroyed north of Kiev, right?

  2. Second, in terms of Vlad the Invader's Plan-B, which was to hold territories won around Kiev, Kharkiv and Kherson, that war Ukraine has also won, as any war-map can show you.

  3. Third, in terms of Russia's winter offensive against Bakhmut, that war was also won by Ukraine and Bakhmut, what's left of it, is now in Ukrainian hands.
Other recent Russian offensives, such as Avdiivka are also proving profitless for Russia.

  4. Fourth, in the naval war, Ukraine's non-existent navy has amazingly destroyed many of Russia's most prized Black Sea Fleet warships and rendered Russia's seized naval base at Sevastopol, Crimea, operationally useless to Russia.

  5. Fifth, in Russia's propaganda war against EU and NATO aid for Ukraine, originally their lies and Kool-Aid fell on deaf ears in the West but seem now to be finding some traction among Russian Repeaters and apologists.
The reason is not because Russians are suddenly telling the truth, because they never do, but rather for political purposes, some in the west pretend to believe Russian lies to make political hay while they can.

  6. Sixth, on numbers of troops, Russia's population is indeed much larger than Ukraine's, but Russia has sent largely non-Russians to die in the Ukrainian meat-grinder, and Ukraine's population is actually larger than Russia's non-Russian population.
Estimates of Russian troop strength in Ukraine are in the 200,000 range.
Ukraine has just under 1,000,000 total armed forces.

  7. Seventh, in the war of attrition, Ukraine has suffered around 70,000 military killed, plus another 15,000 civilians.
Russians have lost around 120,000 killed plus around 200,000 wounded.
However, Russian internal reports of payouts to the families of dead & wounded Russian troops in Ukraine total nearly 1 million, so it's hard to know which numbers to credit.

  8. Eighth, Ukraine's much vaunted summer war of counter-offensive had only limited successes, albeit fought to minimize casualties and without necessary air dominance.
In an age of long-range precision strikes and Unmanned Airial Vehicles, Ukraine has adapted and adopted advanced tactics much faster than Russia, though it appears neither side yet has a decided advantage.

  9. Nineth, the logistical war to provide weapons and supplies to Ukraine has shifted to more long-range projects like training Ukrainian pilots on US F-16s and western tanks.
These are not expected to fully bear fruit until sometime in 2024.
In the meantime, the US contribution, relative to other NATO and EU countries is falling while theirs is rising.

  10. Tenth, in the economic war for the transportation of exports like natural gas and Ukrainian grain, the results are decidedly mixed, with each side suffering restrictions while attempting to find work-arounds for their exports.
Russia's economy is boosted by China and India, while Ukraine's is receiving major help from the EU and USA.

  11. Eleventh, in the great strategic war, the 21st Century's version of the 19th Century's "Great Game", the new "Axis of Evil" -- Vlad the Invader, CCP's Xi-snake, Little Kim and the Moolah Mullahs, among others -- they have now opened up a second front in Israel which is decidedly drawing western media attention, especially American media, away from Ukraine and onto Israel and Gaza.
Worst-case scenario, this could give US neo-isolationists the excuses they hunger for to withdraw Ukraine aid in favor of Israel.
This war is just beginning, outcome uncertain.

  12. Twelfth, the new "Great Game" will likely at some point add a third Axis of Advance -- a third war against the west -- when the CCP's Xi-snake uncoils into the sea to strike and kill Taiwan.
When is anybody's guess, but it will likely be at the moment of maximum US & Allies disarray, confusion, weakness and fear, when we are most likely to respond with uncertainty, stupidity and corruption.
This war has not yet begun in earnest, its outcome now very unknown.
Flaming Conservative: "I feel sorry for the the Ukrainian people; their leader is a crooked thug, insisting on war with a bigger thug.
If they’re blessed, their dictatorial leader will allow elections, and they can pick someone who has more common sense, and has enough decency to care about what happens to them."

That is just insane Russian propaganda talk.
The truth is Ukraine's constitutional republic has now held seven elections for President, with the next one due in March 2024.
According to Ukraine's constitution, elections cannot be held while marshal law is in effect, so Vlad the Invader's "special military operation" could delay Ukranain's elections and the outcome of one will likely determine the other.

As of today, polls in Ukraine show Pres. Zelenskyy as the second most popular of the six elected Ukrainian presidents since 1991, exceeded only by Leonid Kuchma, Ukraine's second president.

Flaming Conservative: "But as far as their war goes, stick a fork in them; they’re done."

No, that fork should be stuck into the Russian propaganda lies you seem so eager to repeat.
They are done, there's nothing truthful in them and you should not be repeating them, FRiend.

Well lets see - what are the possible outcomes:

1. The Stalemate drags on, thousands more combatants die in pointless trench warfare and urban engagements in the increasingly post-apocalyptic landscape. And eventually (as in so many other situations) a true is agreed to, with new borders reflecting the dug-in positions of both armies.

Russian gains most of the 5 disputed territories it has claimed.

2. Ukraine gets itself together, gets lot of help and in 2024 is able to do what it failed to do in 2023 and push the Russians back into Russia, and maybe beyond.

Russia retaliates with nukes, milions die, life on earth as wek know it ends.

3. Russia gets itself together and takes over whatever it wants, Zelensky is drivin into exile. the USA reluctantly accepts Russia’s peace proposal, wihch includes the terms it started the SMO to enforce. (NATO out of Ukraine, Ukraine de-militarization and de-Nazification, etc)

I don’t see a #4 where Ukraine wins.

VladO: "I don’t see a #4 where Ukraine wins."

That's only because you've been blinded by the Russian propaganda Kool-Aid you keep guzzling.

  1. #4) Russia has a larger population than Ukraine, but a smaller population of non-Russians it can send into the Ukraine meat-grinder.
Eventually, Vlad the Invader is forced to conscript actual Russians to fight for him and they say, "hell no, we won't go, go Vlad yourself."
Russia's war effort grinds to an end and collapses.

  2. #5) The Old Soviets exploded their first nuke test in 1949 and every day since they threatened to nuke anybody who looked crosswise at them.
Fortunately, they never did or the world would be a much different place today.
Now Old Soviet KGB agent, Vlad the Invader, is again threatening to nuke the world, but any sane person recognizes that is a threat of, in effect, suicide by cop.
If he starts throwing nukes around, it will not end the world, or the West, but it will end Russia as a nation and a people.
They will be gone forever, and why would any sane person do such a thing?

And if Vlad the Invader ordered a nuke attack on anybody, who around him would follow such suicidal orders?
It is far more likely that Vlad will fall out of a high-story window, or maybe suddenly contract an incurable disease.

  3. #6) Of course, I can't know the minds of Ukraine's military leaders, but if they were me, I'd want to develop a highly capable reserve force, used in combat, but not depleted of energy or equipment, to be trained & increased each month with new western equipment, and then held back until conditions are right for victory, to include destruction of Russian logistics, supplies, bridges and troop morale.
If that takes until 2024 or longer, so be it.
The US Revolutionary War lasted six years -- from 1776 to 1781 at Yorktown.
We fought against the world's second greatest super-power of that time (France was still #1) and had military & economic aid from several European allies.
Victory over the Brits only came after a multi-national, combined arms assault on British navy and army positions.
It took our diplomats in Paris all those years to convince the French to give us enough of the right kinds of aid to win the war.

Ukraine has been fighting in earnest since 2022, less than two years.
At this stage in our War of Independence, we were in very desperate straits, hunkered down in the snows of Valley Forge, starving and sick, most enlistments soon to expire.

So, war is hell on earth, and not always over in just a three day "special military operation".
