Is an AR-15 Sig Series 400 with 30-round clips of 5.56 NATO, better than a 12-gauge for home defense in the U.S. against the kinds of attacks we saw in Israel?

Amazing trove of info in all these replies. Thanks for taking the time to help us out. We are better informed this afternoon than we were this morning.

Youre asking so you dont already have enough of either suitable for both of you...

AND...

youre not the kind of person that has a pile of money laying around to just go buy small arsenal or you would have already done it...

...the best one is the one you have. Nearly any shotgun can fill the role, its versatile, easily acquired, and comparatively cheap.

Get a shotgun now. If you dont have any then you now have one. Today, not a month after you need it. If you already have a rifle or shotgun then you are both armed. Then save up and buy the others until you both have one of each.

Then its time to save up for your side arms.

An important consideration in a SHTF scenario is the range to your neighbor's house.

A buddy of mine described an agreement between him and his good neighbor. If someone was breaking into their house at night, their first call was to the neighbor to shoot the perpetrators from the bedroom window across the street while they were trying to get through the reinforced front door.

Surprise!

Has anyone mentioned one of two of these for defense?

Automatic Assault Shot Gun AA-12.

Low recoil,Stainless Steel Barrel and firing components, magazines from 4-32 rounds.

It mentioned Israel.

Body armor is not uncommon today.

Also, the idea of a target rich environment isn’t absurd. Think after Katrina, or LA 1992 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots)...

It just depends on the situation.

A shotgun is better for survival against a natural threat (more versatile).

556 is better in an apocalyptic scenario where society is breaking down (even though it might be regional/local and temporary).

The latter gets shrugged off, but it happens even here in the US. When things get bad enough, there won’t be any police as with Katrina. They will be worried about their own life and family.

We’re all on multi-acre lots here. My immediate neighbors and I have intersecting lanes of fire and our properties back up to a County park on the Mississippi River.

None of us like the guy across the street from us, but judging from his yard signs every two years, is nominally on “our” side.

Buy both!

And lots of ammo!

THEN, ask for forgiveness!

AND THEN, take her to the range with you!

Do the math, 10 round AR-12 magazine with #4 bucksot (40 projectiles) vs a 30 round 5.56 magazine requiring precision shooting.

Yet he didn’t know the difference between a magazine and a clip.

I had compression issues with an old Saiga 12 I once owned a while back-

I kept the mags loaded and when I went to fire them, they had gone from round to oval-shaped. Caused many failure-to-feeds.

It’s a magazine charger....allows a magazine to be loaded from stripper clips. Looks like either 5.56x45 or 5.45x39 being loaded into an AK magazine.
