A 104-year-old Chicago woman died on Monday morning just days after leaping out of an airplane and breaking the world record for the oldest skydiver.
Centenarian daredevil Dorothy Hoffner lived an “exciting, well-lived life,” a spokesperson for Skydive Chicago & U.S. Parachute Association, who shared the news of her death with the Chicago Sun-Times, said in a statement. The thrill-seeker’s cause of death was not immediately released.
Hoffner became the oldest person to jump out of an airplane with a parachute on Oct. 1, when she safely landed a 13,500-foot tandem jump at Skydive Chicago Airport in Ottawa, Illinois outside of Chicago. “Age is just a number,” Hoffner told the crowd after her record-setting seven-minute jump.

LOL! ‘LIve hard, and still die old’ is my goal.
She was forced out of the plane and landed hard.
Absolutely love it!!!
Do not smoke cigarettes on your one hundredth birthday—they are hazardous to your health...(so sayeth the millions of Karens out there...)
;-)
Age is a number, sure...
But generally the larger the number, the less time alive you have left.
Cut down I the flowe of her womanhood! Such a tragedy!
I didn’t see what she died of, but blood vessels and most of the anatomy are not very elastic at that age. I also had to look at the top of the article to recall her first name. Your statement “Sic transit gloria” would have been hilarious if her name was really Gloria.
Nice. I tandem jumped twice last year at 59.
Old dog, new tricks
Skydivers wear helmets to protect themselves from the ropes hitting them during chute deployment.
The tandem passenger is not close enough for that to be an issue. Plus it they freak out and jerk around, a helmet can hurt the instructor.
Dude... at 104 years old, she’s entitled to it.
It is a ride you can take as a passenger even at age 104, as long as a skilled skydiver is letting you ride with him.
May God make His face to shine upon her and her family. L'Chaim!
Who is that, Keith Richards?
God bless and rest her soul.
The thrill-seeker’s cause of death was not immediately released.
I’m pretty sure her cause of death was old age...
Funnier if smokin’ a Big Fatty!
I remember Larry the Cable Guys routine on his 96 year old grandmother’s death and said something to the effect that she dumped her Harley at Sturgis during bike week.
I love this. Absolutely love it! Not that she is dead, but that she went skydiving at that age.
If I live to 104 for some reason, if I have the gumption to jump out of a plane, my today self is going to stand up and deliver a snappy, crisp salute to my tomorrow self 36 years from now!
God Bless that woman, and I say that with a big grin!
One of my favorite movies is “Secondhand Lions”, where the two old guys, after living long lives of adventure, decide to take a biplane up and fly it under a bridge and through a barn upside down, just...because they always wanted to do it!
And who could shed a tear for those old guys???
YOLO!
