Use of antiviral medication shown to preserve insulin production in children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (Type 1 diabetes is started by an enterovirus)

Researchers have previously demonstrated an association between diabetes and virus infection. New research shows that, among children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (T1D), treatment with antiviral drugs could help preserve the production of insulin. The result shows that it is possible to slow down and eventually prevent type 1 diabetes.

The study built upon research that previously established a link between enterovirus and T1D and investigated the effect of antiviral treatment on insulin production. Those recently diagnosed with T1D who received the antiviral medication maintained a higher level of insulin production after one year than those who did not take the medication, demonstrating that the treatment can slow the progression of T1D.

By stopping the virus before it destroys all the insulin-producing cells, patients may have a milder disease to manage.

The study was a phase-II, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group trial, where 96 children aged 6–15 years, were randomly assigned to receive oral antiviral treatment with pleconaril and ribavirin, or placebo for six months, started less than three weeks after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The primary endpoint was residual insulin production at 12 months.

"The level of insulin production in the body was found to be significantly higher in the group that received antiviral medication compared to the group that received the placebo. These results provide a rationale to find optimal antiviral drugs to be used alone, or as part of combination treatment regimens, to rescue insulin producing cells at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes," said Dahl-Jørgensen.

"This study supports that a low-grade persistent virus infection is an underlying disease mechanism, and that type 1 diabetes may be prevented by development of new vaccines."

Yeah we dont need another vax

Not from the people who are making the current ones which are NOT technically vaccines, but gene-altering therapies.

I’ve heard of people getting diabetes when they had Covid.

Covid is not an enterovirus, but like an enterovirus, it is an RNA virus.

Ivermectin is capable of reversing both viral and bacterial diseases, because viruses and bacteria can share identical methods of attacking cells. Most autoimmune diseases are caused by bacteria which mutate to mimic food opioids, the ones which attach to cells. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease because the damage is done by the immune system.

I had no idea.

Has a viral cause for Type 1 been suspected for a while, or is this completely new research?

Presumably, this might mean that ALL auto-immune diseases are ultimately triggered by a bacteria or virus, and they can be prevented by a vaccine, or controlled with anti-bacterial or anti-viral medications.

Sounds like great news.

Type 1 diabetes is genetic... Not sure where the virus idea comes from... But it’s complete bunk.

it’s pretty well accepted that most autoimmune disease has a genetic component and a trigger component ... just one component without the other component will not cause disease: both components are generally required for the disease to occur ...

The concept that a virus may be involved is more of a scientific supposition, than it is a scientific fact... There has been a lot of research that hasn't resulted in any smoking gun or any consistent evidence that a virus is involved.

The genetic aspect is well proven and fully accepted as the primary cause of type 1 diabetes.

According to the CDC:

Some people have certain genes (traits passed on from parent to child) that make them more likely to develop type 1 diabetes. However, many of them won’t go on to have type 1 diabetes even if they have the genes. A trigger in the environment, such as a virus, MAY also play a part in developing type 1 diabetes. Diet and lifestyle habits do not cause type 1 diabetes.

'May' means maybe, it doesn't mean that it actually causes it.

If the millions and millions being spent yearly studying the possibility of a viruses being involved in diabetes and other autoimmune diseases ever establishes factually that a virus is involved... Then we can accept that concept... Until then, that concept is nothing more than supposition and speculation.

My own brother has type 1 diabetes... Neither of my parents had it, my other siblings and myself didn't have it or develop it.

After doing genealogical research we discovered children of relatives in the early 20th and late 19th century who were recorded as having died of 'wasting disease' and 'starvation'... They obviously weren't being starved... They died from a disease that wasn't very well known at that time... Type 1 diabetes.

Now I have type 2 diabetes... I'm not overweight, in fact I'm underweight... But my DNA profile clearly states that 'People with your genotype are at increased risk for type-2 diabetes'... My father had type 2 and now I do... My mother didn't... So if you want a true insight into your current and future health concerns... Check out your family history and get your DNA analyzed. Life is too short to be worrying about viruses.

It is now better know that ulcers are caused by a virus or bacterial agent. Is it also now believed or proven that anxiety and worry are a triggering agent that activates the germs?

It was already evident that T1D is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system kills off the affected tissue as being compromised by a pathogen. One key would be to keep the intestinal lining tight junctions intact, and keep these viruses out of the blood. That’s done with diet.
