55 Presumed Dead After China's Nuclear Sub Gets Caught In Trap Meant For US, Its Allies: Reports

A Chinese nuclear submarine got caught in a trap intended for U.S. or British submarines in the Yellow Sea, killing 55 people on board, multiple reports claimed. However, Beijing has not yet released any information to corroborate or deny the catastrophic accident.

The news outlets, citing a British intelligence report, said 22 officers, seven officer cadets, nine petty officers and 17 sailors were killed in an accident involving a Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) nuclear submarine on Aug. 21.

International Business Times could not independently verify the information.

If true, the incident "reflects poorly on the PLA Navy's capabilities," Niranjan Oak, a research analyst at Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses in New Delhi, told IBT.

PLA Navy submarine 093-417 was reportedly involved in the accident. The Shang-class submarine got caught in seabed defenses that were installed by Chinese forces to trap U.S. and allied submarines. It ran out of oxygen, killing 55 on board, the reports said.

"Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia (lack of oxygen) due to a system fault on the submarine," British intelligence officials reportedly said. "The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese navy to trap U.S. and allied submarines. This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure."

Probably only part of the crew was lost? That’s simply not enough crew to operate a boat that large (IMHO)

Rumors were circulating on social media and then in the news only a day after the incident. Most reports included the inaccurate detail that the submarine accident occurred in the Taiwan Strait rather than the Yellow Sea.

I didn’t search FR back to August in past posts, but the spurious article I came across this morning - not the one I posted - was the first I’d heard of the incident.

It appears that I’m not alone. Your comment provides yet another clue which validates reports of loss of ccp asset, but I question whether the asset was nuclear. If it was, they’ve good reason to quash this wholesale and it also explains the black hole of facts/reports, most of the details alleged to have come from a leaked Brit intel report. But the inconsistencies smack more of intelligence misinformation than public speculation.

If I was on board I know my last thoughts would be “this reflects poorly on the PLA Navy’s capabilities.”

The average depth of the Yellow Sea is 144 feet, with its max depth around 500 feet. If they went down in shallower waters, it probably didn’t reach crush depth. Its max depth is 400 meters.

This supports the idea of crew asphyxiation, and a gentle touchdown on the sea floor, a whole lot quieter than a crush explosion.

But if it went down in international waters, the USN should be gleeful, as they could Johnny-on-the-Spot recovery of a LOT of classified information, and if they haven’t already, map a lot of traps.

This is good news for the nations of the world that Communist China threatens.

That is the brutality of reality, it is like watching a video of the enemy shooting down one of their jets, and the pilot ejects, for a moment you are relieved that he survived, and then you remember that it is important that a trained enemy pilot die.

If this story is true then it benefits us and everyone else that the submarine crew existed to fight.

It isn’t a matter of ghoulishness, read about the pilot in my post.

You have to be realistic and know that when our enemies lose an asset or a capability it lessens their ability to kill us, or those allied with us.

Red China or North Korea losing a trained submarine crew and officers is good news, losing important aircraft and pilots, ships and trained crews, all is good, ugly but good, it is better they destroy themselves than require American or Taiwanese, or South Korean, or Japanese, or Australian lives to kill them.

Those Chinese that died were not an immediate threat to us.

I am glad I don’t have your view of the world...”kill or be killed”.

You need to find Christ. Your heart is black.

God made those Chinese men just like He made you.

You post so much on military and foreign policy matters yet know nothing about them and in this example, you think that our GIs and veterans are supposed to not find good news when our enemies suffer setbacks and losses.

You also need to rethink the nasty way that you feign your supposed Christian beliefs and use that against Christians like me as you twist and distort Christianity to suit your personal attack agenda against people here.
