55 Presumed Dead After China's Nuclear Sub Gets Caught In Trap Meant For US, Its Allies: Reports

A Chinese nuclear submarine got caught in a trap intended for U.S. or British submarines in the Yellow Sea, killing 55 people on board, multiple reports claimed. However, Beijing has not yet released any information to corroborate or deny the catastrophic accident.

The news outlets, citing a British intelligence report, said 22 officers, seven officer cadets, nine petty officers and 17 sailors were killed in an accident involving a Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) nuclear submarine on Aug. 21.

International Business Times could not independently verify the information.

If true, the incident "reflects poorly on the PLA Navy's capabilities," Niranjan Oak, a research analyst at Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses in New Delhi, told IBT.

PLA Navy submarine 093-417 was reportedly involved in the accident. The Shang-class submarine got caught in seabed defenses that were installed by Chinese forces to trap U.S. and allied submarines. It ran out of oxygen, killing 55 on board, the reports said.

"Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia (lack of oxygen) due to a system fault on the submarine," British intelligence officials reportedly said. "The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese navy to trap U.S. and allied submarines. This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure."

Even in speculation mode, I'm astonished this wasn't posted to FR (that I could find).

Many rumors & inconsistencies (e.g., batteries vs. nuclear vs hypoxia, etc.), but the common thread is both the level of secrecy and tone of disinformation.

Most interesting to me is reports that it got snagged in seafloor 'defenses'/'traps' placed by CCP for Taiwan/US subs, a revelation.

Awaiting forthcoming updates in the days/weeks to follow...

“55 Presumed Dead After China’s Nuclear Sub Gets Caught In Trap Meant For US, Its Allies: Reports”

Let’s see if the usual bunch tries to blame Putin for this also. Based on what they’re claiming, without evidence, regarding the Palestinian attack on Israel, you’d think Putin’s generals organized it.

If you set a trap for your enemy you need to ensure you yourself dont get snagged.

Must be a lot of crap down there, had no clue about the traps either. But, overall, submarine accidents are always kept very quiet - expect that clown who tried to go down to the Titanic in a fiberglass vessel - he got plenty of publicity.

Proof of concept?
Maybe it was the bat soup?
One is reminded of the proverb about digging a trap for one’s enemy, and then falling into it instead.

That's a very large sub (about the same size as a USN Los Angeles Class) - only 55 lost? Still, yikes.

A nuclear sub couldn’t stay submerged for six hours? I wonder what they broke that caused them to suffocate in such a short time.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense. (Not blaming you, Logi…)

Great news. Hopefully they send their best guys over there to retrieve the sub and all the missiles blow up at the same time when they Bering it back to their base

"This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure."

These two sentences seem somewhat contradictory...

Anyway what kinda trap was it?

Ps 35 8 So let them fall into their own traps.
Let them stumble into their own nets.
Let some unknown danger catch them

Again, as I stated, ‘many inconsistencies’ (my word for it is ‘fog’).

However, that’s what we get from the USG as well regarding loss of naval assets, so it’s to be expected.

I researched reports of a ccp sub loss prior to posting and there’s enough weight to the reports that I opted to post the best article I could find (rather than DM).

I believe that they did lose an asset, but at this time the ‘fog’ is obfuscating useful details/facts, the most interesting being the seafloor obstacle reports (akin to losing military assets in their own minefield).

55 sailors is a small crew for that sized sub.
