An ex-Amish TikToker revealed that the national smartphone emergency alert got his friends from the religious community in trouble for having phones.
Every US smartphone, television and radio received an alert on Wednesday at 2:18pm ET as part of a nationwide test for an emergency alert system.
Unfortunately for three members of the Amish community, the alert also involved a powerful alarm sound that outed them for having modern devices - which go against their beliefs.
Amish beliefs and traditions condemn modern technology and encourage plain clothing. The community is known for not using any modern devices, dressing in old-fashioned clothes, and even opting for a horse and buggy to get around.
Eli Yoder, a previous member of the Amish community, posted a TikTok to share what happened when the emergency alert revealed the hidden phones of his 'Amish buddies'.
He said: 'Guess what, I just got a couple of my Amish buddies shunned today by the Amish Church.
'Over the few years there’s been quite a few Amish men that reached out and wanted phones, so whenever they request to have a phone I’ll do everything I can to try to get them a phone.
'Not always can I do so, but in some circumstances, I have been able to get them a phone.
'One guy said the elders were coming in his driveway and they were there to speak with him about something that they heard about him, that he might have to get shunned.
'Right when that was going on, the alert went off and it was in his pocket. Now he’s getting shunned for both. Whatever they were about to shun him for and also the cell phone.'

I’ve seen some of the girls at my Amish market “secretly” looking at their phones — or somebody’s.
For business, but not for chit chat. Officially, anyway.
They should have turned them off.
The Amish workers at the local Amish market come down from Pennsylvania by van. A couple of hours drive.
One of the girls who used to be a waitress at the restaurant told my wife and me, “We’re allowed to ride in them, but we’re not allowed to drive them.”
Yes, I’ve seen a lot of babes at our market. A few in particular.
I live close to a ton of them. They had cell phones before I did.
HA!
So did i
Teh shopping centr across from teh one where our Amish market is has a Dollar Tree and I’ve seen some of them in there from time to time. We even ran into one of the girls in Walmart.
“Should have either turned them off, or enabled Do Not Disturb. “
My point is our govt alert overrides Do Not Disturb
I didn’t get the alert. Reading this post is the first I knew that it even happened. I also didn’t notice anything on my phone. I happened to be in the middle of a four-hour surgery when it was sent. I’m surprised the phone didn’t have any notification. It may be that the hospital had safely placed the phone somewhere that there was no cell coverage.
I would suppose that the Feds have ways of getting around whatever measures the phones’ owners take.
Different sects have different beliefs.
Some are allowed to use electricity but only what they need so not direct on power grid, because power is 24/7 and don’t use it. But do have generators to run large machinery erc.
Some can ride in cars but not own or drive them.
And some are more strict about tech.
“...the alert also involved a powerful alarm sound that outed them...”
It turned my volume up all the way, too. That must have really scared the horses.
Then they should have just turned them off if they knew the test was coming.
“Yes, I’ve seen a lot of babes at our market. A few in particular.”
I read somewhere that the Amish are the only white group in the US that is actually increasing in population. Not hard to see why.
I can definitely see why. There was one waitress a few years ago (before that she had worked at the meat counter) who must have been a nominee for Best Rear End in Lancaster County.
