WASHINGTON, Monday, Oct. 5.

A letter from Dalton,. Ga., Sept. 26, published in the Richmond Dispatch on Saturday, says:

"The over-sanguine multitude will be somewhat disappointed to know that the chances of Gen. BRAGG taking Gen. ROSECRANS' army is no easy job. Although his losses have been heavy, he yet has a very formidable army."

The two armies were still confronting each other at last accounts at Chattanooga. ROSECRANS, it is said, has established three lines in front of the town, and it is also reported that BRAGG is fortifying Missionary Ridge.

The Examiner of Oct. 2, has the following:

ATLANTA, Ga., Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Trains have arrived here from Chickamauga Station, bringing such of our wounded as will bear removal. About 2,500 remain in the field hospitals who are too severely wounded to endure transportation.

A report reached Dalton yesterday that Gen. SAMUEL JONES occupied Knoxville, and that Gen. BURNSIDE retreated toward Cumberland Gap.

Maj. RICE GRAVES, Chief of artillery of Gen. BRECKENRIDE's Staff, died on Sunday from wounds received at Chickamauga.

The Examiner says, editorially:

"There is no fighting at Chattanooga. Loose telegrams, from irresponsible parties, would have us believe that BRAGG had cut ROSECRANS' communications -- holding Lookout Mountain, the road to Nashville, &c. But from BRAGG's failure to resume the offensive, we fear there is too much truth in ROSECRANS' dispatch to his Government, that he held an 'impregnable position.'

It is said BURNSIDE has succeeded in reinforcing him, and we have no reason to doubt it. BURNSIDE left JONE's front long enough ago to have accomplished the march."

PHILADELPHIA, Monday, Oct. 5.

A special dispatch from Knoxville, Tenn., to the Bulletin, says Gen. CARTER has taken position at Bull's Gap. The rebels hold Greenville, strongly reinforced. BAYARD and WOOLFORD are still in advance below Loudon,
