These fools weren’t living off the grid; they were three utterly clueless people who naively thought that “nature will provide.” They went into the wilderness wholly unprepared.

I have spent a lot of time around there. It is only about 25 miles to Gunnison.

They composted themselves. Too bad they had to kill the kid too.
Probably got 30 below for a few days and the crochet unicorn wool caftans
just weren't warm enough. Lucky they were able to warm themselves over
the glowing patchouli sticks right to the very end.

There is a large amount of irony in posting how you live off grid on the Internet.

"...the family reportedly relied only on YouTube videos." I watched a guy on YouTube build a nice little log cabin in 30 minutes. What's the big deal?

Off grid living is not easy. But unless you are stupid it should not kill you.
These people were not that bright. Too bad about the kids.

When the SHTF, I'm bugging out to Driftwood, TX, about 30 miles west of Austin, and an hour east of Fredericksburg. Driftwood is a town of 300, with several wineries and dining establishments, to include Salt Lick BBQ.
If you gotta go, might as well enjoy what little time left eating well and drinking great wine.

“Pioneers only lived off the land back in the day because game, fish, and food were way more plentiful and easy to obtain from nature, and it was still hard.”
This is a good point, especially in light of a few people here who live in our ‘Outback’ and say things like: “No problem, if the Ukraine War goes south, I’ll just hunt me some venison in my backyard.” I’ve pointed out, that plan is fine if you can rid of 99% of the other people trying to do the same...
