Vehicle stolen in armed carjacking crashes into tree, bursts into flames, kills all 4 teens inside; 2 were cousins who aunt says were picked up, likely didn't know about crime

A vehicle stolen in an armed carjacking in Maryland last week crashed into a tree, burst into flames, and killed all four teenagers inside, police said.

What's more, two of the teens were cousins, and an aunt told WUSA-TV they were picked up and likely didn't know the vehicle was stolen — or they never would've entered it.

According to Prince George's County Police, officers on Friday night saw a Kia Sorento with expired temporary tags and tried to get the driver to pull over, the station said, adding that the Kia's driver sped off.

Officials told WUSA that officers stopped trying to pursue the Kia after losing sight of it. The station said police soon learned the Kia's tags didn't match the vehicle.

Minutes later, witnesses said the driver of the Kia tried to pass another motorist on the shoulder in the 12800 block of Woodmore Road in Mitchellville, the station said, citing police, adding that the Kia driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree, after which the vehicle burst into flames.

Neighbors noted what they believed was the sound of an explosion, WUSA said, adding that other motorists tried rescuing the four teens.

The station said the crash occurred between two and three miles from the location of the attempted traffic stop — and officials soon learned that the Kia was taken in an armed carjacking earlier in Greenbelt.

Greenbelt is just over eight miles northwest of Mitchellville.

Relatives told WUSA that all four killed were teenagers and that three of them were students at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. The school is in Springdale — just a six-minute drive from the crash site.

Family members noted to the station that Serenity Sellman, 15, was the only girl in the vehicle.

“We’re tired of trying to save them from themselves. It’s hard enough to save ourselves from them.”

That is the money shot right there.

We went from helping “the underprivileged” to “gibsmedats!”

Family is always the last to know when their kids go bad.

Admit.

“I have had all I can take. You still have some taking to do?”

Jesus on the cross comes to mind.

People cannot constantly become emotionally invested in the deaths of someone they don’t even know when it’s the result of stupid criminal behavior.

The emotional toll of getting worked up over those kinds of deaths of a total stranger is not worth it. Sometimes there are consequences to foolish decision and behavior. This is one of them.

This thread does have some rather heartless comments. Young lives being cut short is not amusing.

Think of the lives that may have been saved by these young lives having been cut short, not to mention the many hundreds of thousands of dollars it has saved taxpayers.

Shame about the vehicle though

No sympathy for car thieves

We are way beyond “emotionally invested.” When it comes to the perpetrators of an armed carjacking, you gotta be rooting for the tree here.

(A vehicle stolen in an armed carjacking)

First part of that sentence is quite significant.

The key word here in your statement is “may”. We simply don’t and won’t ever know. Paying the ultimate price as a child is tragic, that’s all I am saying. Deserved to die? I wouldn’t go so far. Actions have consequences and some people are indeed innocent and maybe the Aunt is correct. No way to know now. I don’t try to paint with such a broad brush. Just being pragmatic. There is no solution unfortunately. Things have regressed almost too far to be salvageable.

Interestingly, there’s a recent recall for KIA fires:

https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/consumer-alert-kia-and-hyundai-park-outside

There are a lot of vehicle fires, talk to towing companies and they’ll tell you.

I’ve heard of vehicle fires where the vehicle was parked in the garage, for two days, not driven, and then the owner is awakened in the middle of the night with their car on fire. Pretty scary.

“How many KIA’s burst into flames when they crash? Is this a common occurrence in this KIA model... Do they typically burst into flames?”

Some burst into flames when parked:

These young thugs just got deleted from the thug master list. Best is the police cannot be blamed, because they gave up their pursuit,

Oh come on. The two cousins knew they were going joyriding, or whatever it’s called today.

Obligatory empathy: I bet they wanted OUT of that car pretty bad once the police were chasing them and their “friend” proved to be a fatally reckless dumbass. Probably screamed for their lives.

Years ago, a drunk driver crashed into a tree in my front yard. The crash left a deep gash in the tree so it was likely to die.

Did it?
