I have recently had holds put on my gasoline purchases using a debit card.
I drive a company car. A Pilot station in WV made me give them my card and ID before I could purchase. Some BS about a customer scamming them with a fleet card.
I fail to see how someone else’s criminal act becomes my problem to get punished for.
What made it worse was these inbreds couldn’t be bothered to put a sign on the pump. I had to figure out myself that they had a policy different than every other gas station in the country.
Why the hell would you blame Trump??
Holds on debit cards at gas stations has been around for decades.
I didn't blame Trump . . . I ASSOCIATED my comment about Trump with the freedom we experienced BECAUSE of Trumps' elimination of regulations.
“Reading with understanding should be mandatory in public schools. I didn’t blame Trump”
You have a serious English deficiency problem yourself. Blaming someone for something means you claim they had involvement for an action, and you claimed his deregulations caused this, so that is blaming Trump. What a moron you are. Be a man and stand up for your comments and stop trying to weasel out of them like a little kid.
Read the title,
was it a reg he CANCELLED ?
Never, never use a debit card at a gas station regardless of what you’re dealing with here, legit or not. Those are the worst for skimmer fraud. It’s gotten so bad that the thieves have the balls to put “out of order” signs on the chip reader portion on the bottom of the unit to make you swipe the card magnetic stripe because they can’t hack the encrypted chip (yet). They have even drilled holes into the proximity reader to create a reader error and force you to use the mag stripe swipe. It’s crazy!
“It protects the merchant. “
The merchant has the option to NOT take the cards at all if they don’t want the risk.
Never use a debit card, EVER. My bank’s ATM card is a debit card, so I had them disable that feature. Now it only works as an ATM card, and nobody can defraud me.
“was it a reg he CANCELLED ?”
No, you stupid little kid. Debit Card holds at gas pumps have been around obviously since before you were born.
You got frustrated at a gas pump then blamed Trump, then claimed you didn’t blame Trump. That’s just retarded.
How about asking when such policies were in effect and start from there instead of jumping straight to blaming Trump?
The cards with an RF chip is the problem to worry about. With the right radio device it can be cloned from about 3 feet away.
I’m guessing you have no idea what it’s like to run a retail business.
“I’m guessing you have no idea what it’s like to run a retail business.”
Lol... Was born into it, self employed all my life, and still in the retail business right now.
But I don’t abuse my customers with the blanket presumption of guilt. If I lose money for some reason it is my own fault because of my own decisions, not the fault of my customers. I refuse to burden my honest customers with policies that presume them as all guilty.
It is bad business and just pisses them off. And the last thing you want is the prerequisite of animosity before they even buy anything yet. The rewards of treating customers with respect and appreciation far outweighs the minimal risks.
Look at the businesses in question here. In my experience, the ones that commonly put holds on debit/credit charges are those that cater to travelers and/or involve the use of expensive assets (rental cars, for example). A gas station or convenience store near a highway will get tons of customers — including many from out of state — who conduct one transaction and then are never seen again. These are the customers who represent the biggest risk to the establishment’s owners when it comes to things like credit/debit card fraud, counterfeit bills, etc.
Holds vary by merchant If you insist on using a debit card at a pump, try prepaying with the debit card.

Your criticism of me BEGAN with my alleged "blame" for President Trump eliminating regulations which was clearly (by the title of the thread) NOT what I was doing, rather . . . I wondered if the regulations President Trump EO'd away were the reason for the lull in (MY case, MY area) holds had disappeared and I wondered if they had now just re-appeared.
No one else is criticizing language, so . . . .
It's OK, you're much too eclectic for me to understand you.
knarf: The way I read and interpreted Your Post was that You noticed that Gas purchases are putting a HOLD on $100.00 (I just used that amount for discussion purposes) even though You only purchased $65.00 (Again I just used that amount for discussion purposes) and You didn’t have that happen for a while but now it’s happening again. You were inquiring about President Donald J. Trump enacting a regulation of some sort to stop the Gas Stations from doing so and You were asking if the regulation had gone away/been suspended or rescinded now that President Donald J. Trump was no longer in office.
BTW, I have noticed that the Local Store/Gas Station We use for gas purchases in the last few months been putting a $75.00 hold on Gas purchases that are actually $53.00-$57.00 fill up for Our Truck. It’s usually got the actual purchase amount by the next morning. It just takes until the Merchant Batches the Debit/ Credit Sales on the Card Machine at the end of the day.
In closing My Comment.
Code Toad, I don’t see that knarf was BLAMING President Donald J. Trump in any way, shape, form or fashion.
So try taking a couple of Chill Pills and Relax.
Our Card is a Bank Debit/Credit Card that is not an actual Credit Card. If there’s no money in the account then We cannot make a purchase unless We use the Overdraft protection available to Us.
“So try taking a couple of Chill Pills and Relax.”
Typical idiotic millennial response.
“You’re a good democrat.”
Yet you claim I support Trump. Wow. Just dumb.
1st thing- I am NOT a millennial. I am an Grumpy Old Man.
2nd thing- Try admitting that you are wrong about this entire situation. Knarf clearly posted what He meant and that WAS NOT BLAMING President Donald J.Trump.
3rd thing- Who pissed in your cornflakes ?
4th thing- STFU
