A woman is dead after authorities say she was struck by a plane while mowing the lawn in Oklahoma last week.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Samantha Hayes, was on a lawn mower at the Broken Bow Airport in McCurtain County Friday afternoon, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

At the same time, a 1972 Bonanza A36 piloted by a 70-year-old man was coming in to land on the runway.

I was thinking that - earbuds, etc.

Hot day, maybe really tired too from the heat.

The other day, busy 4-lane road, basically a highway inside the city just off the main highway - guy riding a RAZOR SCOOTER in the middle turn lane - very difficult to see.

Oh, and he was doing it in ......... RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC...........

Mowing that particular lawn, however, increases the odds...

A non-controller tower...so no one to advise pilot of ground traffic.

What do you think she’d otherwise have done, jumped off the mower far enough to avoid the crash?

Presumably a good swerve of her vehicle wouldn’t have spared here.

My first thought on reading the title and excerpt was, "Damn. What are the odds on being hit by a plane while riding a lawnmower?"

But then I read further, and she was mowing somewhere around an airstrip, which, well, increases your chances exponentially, especially if you are mowing a taxiway or something, or even the grass strip itself.

Note: I am not making fun of this poor woman killed by the plane. But this is more towards my initial impression upon reading the title, which, though tragic, made my mind wander down non-tragic pathways)

I have no doubt there is an ICD-10 code for that (codes used by medical personnel to classifly medical conditions to classify and justify the use of various approved medical procedures on them, largely for the purposes of payment or reimbursement from insurance companies.)

J11.1: Influenza with other respiratory manifestations, seasonal influenza virus not identified

M80.021G: Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, right humerus; subsequent encounter for fracture with delayed healing (or, in other words, osteoporosis of old age with a repeated upper right arm fracture that is taking long to heal).

Those above are just two valid examples. However, some are almost funny to the point of absurdity, but you know they made the ICD-10 codeing dictonary because they happened to someone, somewhere (examples below):

I took a quick look, and in about ten seconds found:

V97.3 - Person on ground injured in air transport accident

So, I have no doubt there is one in there that is something like:

V96.238 - Person struck by crashing plane while operating riding lawnmower.

I feel sorry for the pilot, but how could he not see that there was something going on next to the runway? He didn’t see the lawn mower until he was already on the ground? Why not? Nothing looked unusual from the air?
Did he approach from behind her? If so, that was a stupid decision.
I’m sure he feels just awful.

Looks like this boat skipper also wasn’t paying sufficient attention:

It looks like the runway is about 50 feet wide. The Bonanza has a wingspan of 33.6 feet. If the pilot landed off the center line and she was mowing at the edge of the runway, I could see how she got hit..

If she was mowing with headphones on, she would likely be completely unaware of her surroundings.

Your riding lawn mower must be quieter than mine. I can't hear someone yelling 20 feet away. I use hearing protection to keep from going deaf.

Very sad for her and her family.

Unfortunately, the ignorant and low intellect comments flocked to the thread. As usual.

On a non controlled GA runway, aren’t the planes supposed to do a fly-by to look for activity.

I live across the street from our local GA strip, and the planes fly the length, maje a tyrn and fly across before lining up for landing.

It’s possible the pilot did this and saw her but by the time he landed, she came on the runway.
