Lawns get fairy circles here in the northwest. They are fungal infections. Nearly impossible to eradicate, too. I’ve got one in a small stand of trees in my front yard. Lot’s of people say they originate where old trees once stood.

Global warming not mentioned in article? Interesting.

Sometimes you have to read an article and pay attention to what it doesn’t say.

My late father in law said that if you water your lawn after sunset you run the risk of getting these.

If they are found in the US, the phenomenon would most likely have its roots in San Francisco.

This is because they were able to identify specific features common to all the sites in which the fairy circles can be found. These include a very dry, arid, desert environment; high temperatures and high precipitation seasonality; and soil with very low nutrients, and a high sand content.

from the article.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/01/13/fairy-circles-namibia-australia-desert-mystery/

Here is an article with some science.

Getzin acknowledges that plants don’t have brains, per se, but this is an intelligent mathematical pattern. Several of the circles are also evenly spaced from one another to create a uniformly repeated honeycomb pattern — part of its eerie appearance. Researchers call this uniform design a turing pattern, which was first explained by mathematician Alan Turing.

Could it be DESIGN? or it just looks like design but it really random..............................

From the article: But we still don't know with certainty what causes them.

Animal feeds on plant and ingests seeds.

Animal defecates.

Seeds in feces germinate.

New plant sprouts.

Plant drops seeds.

Seedlings only grow on the outer edge that hasn't had the soil depleted.

New plants drop seeds.

Seedlings only grow outside the necrotic zone, continuing the expansion of the outer ring.

Repeat and the ring keeps getting larger.

The same scenario applies to fungi in wetter areas.

Why are fairies tagged with dead spots? Why not trolls or gremlins?

As to the spots, dogs.

My lawn is peppered with them since the two dogs I have are obsessive about peeing on the same damned spot that the other just used. Even girls do it.

Check for critters.

I have property and ants do stuff like this. They are quite busy ants clearing about a 6 foot radius of everything around their nest and then they spread out little grains of rock.
