WASHINGTON, Thursday, Sept. 17.

The rebels, yesterday morning, made an attempt to recross the Rapidan, which was prevented by our artillery and cavalry. The rebels advanced in three columns, with artillery, toward the river. and being met by our troops on this side, soon fell back.

Appearances indicate that the rebels will dispute any attempt on the part of Gen. MEADE to cross the Rapidan.

The Cavalry Fighting in Culpepper.

Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.

ORANGE COURT-HOUSE. Sunday, Sept. 13.

A considerable skirmish occurred to-day between three brigades of our cavalry and the enemy in considerable force of cavalry, infantry and artillery. Our men gradually retuned from Miller's Hill beyond Culpepper Court-house, to a point five miles this side. Some of the fighting was quite close. We lost at out forty killed and wounded. Among the later was Col. BEALE, commanding Gen. W.H.F. LEE's brigade.

It seems that we were attempting to remove some ammunition from the Court-house, when the enemy approached and fired at the train, producing great consternation among ladies and citizens near the depot. I regret to learn that some cars loaded with ammunition were left.

The shooting came like a thunder-clap upon the people of the village, who were quietly worshipping in their churches. One shell passed through the telegraph office. I do not believe the enemy designs a general advance, but only a reconnaissance in force, or, perhaps, a sort of raid.

ON HORSEBACK, Monday morning, Sept. 14.

I learn this morning that our loss yesterday was greater than is stated above. It is said that one brigade lost sixty -- though most were wounded. Our retreat must have been somewhat precipitate, as our dead and the badly wounded were left upon the field.
