Suppose a foreign country, whichever, mexico, china, Russia, Etc, sent an army to March into San Francisco and then annexed it into their country.
Rhe citizens of San Francisco would now pay taxes to that country and would would follow thier laws.
Would you fight or have your son fight to liberate the city although it's values are very different from your own? Would you view them as fellow Americans that deserve Liberation just the same?
Or would you gave the opinion that is not worth fighting for?

Depends on which army it was and what they were planning to do in the long run.
I live in a one party state as it is, so I if woke up and noticed the CCP Army setting up a roadblock down the road I would probably continue business as usual. It isn’t like they would be much worse than what we have now.
If it was an alien zombie army that wanted to kill all humans, I would fight hard.
The question should be would the US military defend it?
I am a mechanic, I’m 60 and I would volunteer to repair and maintain equipment for our military for fighting.
I don’t thing there is a need for a country to invade what our politicians will just allow them to buy anyway.
We might need to fight the enemies within.

To answer your question, San Francisco would be a strategically useful port for an invading army, so one might feel obliged to help out in whatever way one could.
