INTERESTING FROM REBELDOM: Details of the Operations at Charleston; A NARROW ESCAPE FOR FORT SUMTER (9/12/1863)

From the Richmond Sentinel, Aug. 4.

There has been some confusion in the accounts from Charleston, which has prevented a clear understanding of the present relative positions of opposing forces on Morris Island. From the correspondent of the Atlanta Intelligencer, we have, however, a connected statement, which we present in substance as follows:

We have received our late Southern files, including Richmond papers, to Tuesday last:

On Tuesday night, the 25th ult., the enemy attempted to take our rifle pits, which lay about four hundred yards in front of Battery Wagner. They were unsuccessful, being repulsed with severe loss. On the next evening about seven o'clock they commenced a severe cannonade of our position, ending in another assault on the rifle pits, in much greater strength than before. The struggle was a long one, the cannonading lasting until two o'clock that night. But this time the enemy remained in possession of the pits. They immediately set about strengthening their position, and pressing the advance of their sappers; and according to the correspondent whose account we are following, advanced their trenches that same night, within two hundred yards of Wagner, doing this under a heavy fire from our troops.

It will be seen, therefore, that the struggle has come to close quarters, and will probably soon end in a hand-to-hand fight. We copy below from the Charleston Curter, of the 31st ultimo, some details of subsequent operations, the general purport of which, however, we have already had by telegraph:

NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS.

During Friday right and Saturday the shelling from the enemy's land batteries was unusually slow, our James' Island batteries, however, keeping up a constant and vigorous fire in reply.

Until yesterday no formidable attack has been made on Fort Sumter since the attack
