Yes, I think they are better off than Ukraine.
Some indicators:
Russia’s economy has not shrunk in GDP by 1/3 like Ukraine has. In fact it’s growing a small bit this year.
Russia does not have the Ukrainian 26-27% inflation. About half that.
Nor do the Russians have a heavily damaged infrastructure.
Ukraine lost a good chunk of their land, an industrial area and port city.
The counteroffensive has “failed,” but don’t say that loudly. The official line is that we’re winning there too.
The Russians don’t have the casualties we pretend they have and they have 3.5 times the population of Ukraine.
The Ruble didn’t crash.
The stores in Russia still are stocked.
Most the world is NOT on board with our sanctions.
The oil and gas the which fuel Russia’s economy, they are still selling.
Ukraine just got rejected again in its bid to join NATO, ironically the cause of this war.
EU membership is likely not happening soon and that was well in reach before the war.
But for the time being we’re still winning on all fronts:
