Overnight olfactory enrichment using an odorant diffuser improves memory and modifies the uncinate fasciculus in older adults

There is a clear need for a new approach to the treatment of cognitive loss in older adults that takes little effort but is highly effective and affordable (Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessments, 2008). Environmental enrichment has long been studied in rats and mice, which can be enriched by placing them in a large cage with conspecifics, a running wheel, and regularly changing physical elements, rather than their restrictive box cage (Kempermann, 2019). The enrichment stimulates neuroplasticity that improves their human-like neurological symptoms in more than two dozen animal models of human neurological disorders (Nithianantharajah and Hannan, 2009; Hannan, 2014; Kempermann, 2019). Environmental enrichment also has more specifically been shown to ameliorate the human-like cognitive decline in animal models of aging (Valero et al., 2011; Patel, 2012). In lab animals, enhanced visual (Iaccarino et al., 2016), auditory (Martorell et al., 2019; Jung et al., 2023), and mastication (de Siqueira Mendes et al., 2021) stimulation, facilitates memory as it does in human older adults (Leon and Woo, 2018; Chan et al., 2022).

Very interesting study considering olfactory issues are tied to memory. Maybe there is something to incense? This study was published about a month or so ago and states. 226% increase in cognition after 6 months of the trial. Maybe someone with a better cognition can read and expand. My sense of smell left me long ago.

What if you live in a downtown neighborhood with odors, the unpleasant kind?

Will there be negative memory effects, or what?

This post will probably be pulled, couldn't, for lack of a better term, sexual smells stimulate the brain.

Mods I tried to say it in the most scientific way possible.

Why did Hugh Hefner live past 90.

LOL, Hugh had so many germs and viruses they all killed each other off.

Kind of like when George Carlin said, the more Cancer you got the healthier you are, because all the Cancers will eat each other up.

“Used to get different essential oils at Hobby Lobby. Can’t find any now.”

I thought it would be a connection to the makers of ‘smells’ that funded the study, and Proctor and Gamble did fund the study. However, I have seen another reference to the article and it appears to be legit.

Breathing smoke from Canada thru your nose improves your memories of firmer girlfriends.

I used to diffuse essential oils in one of those appliances designed originally for them but learned that I could diffuse diluted hydrogen peroxide as a superior deodorant against unpleasant odors — and that doing so seemed to boost my recovery ability from muscle soreness due to once a week gym workouts (I exercise daily on a lesser intensity just to maintain and attain my daily full-range movement as a retired senior). I attribute this to the added Oxygen atom in the water molecule that makes it H2O2 — which the body is hungry for.

Many pioneering scientists and researchers have advocated hydrogen peroxide therapies and administrations (by consumption or injection) — but what I found perfect for this purpose, were some inexpensive misting fans — that can be filled with diluted H2O2 (1:50 — 3%) preferably in filtered water. That is the perfect administration of an otherwise extremely potent healthy enhancement of any environment. It is like taking a walk along the ocean in that production of increased ions — that most people find invigorating. One gets a similar effect just breathing in the mist with that device.

The body actually produces its own H2O2 as the basis of its own immune system — so breathing it in in this manner is protective of the respiratory tract from bacteria, viruses, fungi and other pollutants — with predictably, all kinds of health benefits.

Hmmm...I wonder if putting a dish of hydrogen peroxide in front of the a/c return would work?

I hadn’t heard of the H2O2 effect. Sounds good. I’ll probably try it.
