At a time when the majority of Americans recognize the corporate media are dishonest, journalism tops the list of the 10 most regretted college majors, according to a ZipRecruiter survey from last November that CNBC republicized on Sunday. A whopping 87 percent of journalism graduates regret their degree choice, with sociology, liberal arts, communications, and education next on the regret list. Of job seekers with college degrees overall, 44 percent regret their chosen major.

Maybe if they put out a product that actually informed people....

It would be interesting to see how many get disillusioned by the lack of integrity the profession appears to have.

Well, Duh.

If you are a person that likes to lie then the media or politics is for you.

If you like being somebody´s puppet then of course a career in the media is for you.

If you are Miss Piggy and cannot function without somebody´s hand up you ass, then a career in the media is for you.

The first industry I learned from an early age not to trust was the media. In the past 5 years I have also learned to distrust the FBI and the medical establishment. The scary part is that not only do most people know they are being lied to, those telling the lies are aware of this and simply do note care.

My wife worked in “the media” for 25 years. She works with the median now, and for the past 17 years or so.

What she would tell you is that people regret it because there is very little pay in it. In this age of “citizen journalists” there are so many people willing to do the job for literally no pay…it thins out the market pretty easily. Local journalism outside the rural areas is almost non existent.

Local TV stations go through “talent” so fast because the pay and hours suck so bad…you either move “up” or out in a short time.

The regret of journalism majors is not a morality issue. It is MOSTLY a financial issue.

“ The regret of journalism majors is not a morality issue. It is MOSTLY a financial issue.”

If one does not trust what one is reading, then why pay for it. If it was credible then people would buy it.

Think of the hundreds of stories that could be told about the corruption in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit etc. The issue is that all the media execs want to rub elbows with the politicians so no investigation will ever happen.

But the big question is WHY do they regret it?

My local paper is nothing but cut & paste crap from the day before. It now costs $2 to find out what happened yesterday. Cutting edge.

These are all notoriously "soft" majors by reputation (if not always in fact, depending on the institution) hence tend to be overpopulated. In the marketplace that translates to high supply, low demand. Which is why:

The average journalist’s salary comes out to $45,307 per year.

22 bucks an hour. Minimum wage in a lot of places is 15. That's going to lead to a lot of disillusionment, especially given the student debt often taken on to obtain the ticket.

“Think of the hundreds of stories that could be told about the corruption in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit etc”

Yup—the big story about journalism is not what they do cover—it is all the amazing stories they refuse to cover.

It is like training to be an airplane mechanic and then told you are only allowed to fix the ground service vehicles because airplanes are racist and hurt the climate.

I believe, and have often said, there are multiple Pulitzers out there for reporting corruption, but none of the media drones will report it for fear of destroying their careers.

Most journalists get paid badly, too.

Part of that is because about one third of younger journalists are foreign born.

Another problem - AI is writing another one third of the work previously written by humans.

Another problem - based on my own reading experience each day, almost no one hires editors anymore, which means limited opportunities for advancement.
