KY governor has 'set the stage' for ignoring law banning him from appointing a Dem if McConnell steps down: report
Raw Story via MSN ^ | August 2023 | Tom Boggioni

According to a report from the Washington Times, should Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) decide to step down due to health concerns, Kentucky's Democratic governor already has already made the constitutional case that he can pick a Democrat to fill the seat despite a law the state GOP majority passed in 2021.

With questions being raised about how long the senior Republican will remain in Congress after an incident last week where he stood stock-still and appeared unable to speak before reporters -- only to be led away by some of his GOP colleagues -- attention in Kentucky has turned to who will be his inevitable replacement.

As it stands now. McConnell's term does not expire until 2026 after winning re-election in 2020.

According to the Washington Times, in 2021 a GOP supermajority overrode Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear's veto of a bill that requires "the governor to file mid-term vacancies in the U.S. Senate from a list of three candidates chosen by the state party of the previous sitting senator."

As Michael Abate, a Louisville attorney who has assisted the Kentucky Democratic Party, explained, Beshear may ignore the law, appoint a Democrat, and challenge the Republican legislature to take him to court.

Too busy funding this clown car of candidates Nikki Haley asked me for money after her “nursing home” comment today.

That circular firing squad running for President detracts from support for the GOP candidate for Governor who is Mitch’s understudy Daniel Cameron.

This story smells like a scary story to keep Mitch from being forced out right now. Drama supporting Mitch.

Kentucky is a tough place because the media is very left and the unions are still strong. The teachers union was the driving force behind getting andy elected.

The media, news papers and tv stations, even the the mountain news, WYMT, are left.

I agree. On the other hand, give Schumer 50 votes and three Supreme Court vacancies, and he will jam through three unapologetic communists without any chance of losing a single vote. We were biting our fingernails off with 52-53 votes.

Once in session, amend the KY Constitution or law that permits the Gov to appoint a senator to fill vacancy.

Then they should vote to repeal the 17th amendment. (If they can get enough D senators to get a 3/4 majority.)

Unfortunately, Mitch also stood by while at least a DOZEN (and maybe 15) Senate seats were stolen by the Demonrats just since 2018. The GOP should have at least 60-63 seats in the body.

A real Senate leader would’ve challenged and had each and every race thoroughly investigated for fraud and chicanery. Not a single race was called to be investigated by McConnell. He’d prefer to serve as Minority Leader over a bunch of puppet loyalists than allow any “outsider” Republicans to win and threaten his power.

To wit (installed Senator vs. actual winner):
AK - Lisa Murkowski (Dem-RINO) (2022 - won by Kelly Tshibaka)
AZ - Mark Kelly (2020 - won by Martha McSally & 2022 - won by Blake Masters)
AZ - Kyrsten Sinema (2018 - also won by McSally)
CO - John Hickenlooper (2020 - (probably) won by Cory Gardner)
GA - Jon Ossoff (2020 - won by David Perdue)
GA - Raphael Warnock (2020 - won by Kelly Loeffler; 2022 - won by Herschel Walker)
MI - Debbie Stabenow (2018 - won by John James)
MI - Gary Peters (2020 - also won by John James)
MN - Tina Peters (2020 - won by Jason Lewis)
MT - Jon Tester (2018 - won by Matt Rosendale)
NV - Jackie Rosen (2018 - won by Dean Heller)
NV - Catherine Matso (2022 - won by Adam Paul Laxalt)
NH - Maggie Hassan (2022 - won by Don Bolduc)
NM - Ben Ray Lujan (2020 - won by Mark Ronchetti)
PA - John K. Fetterman (2022 - won by Mehmet Oz)

Not counting dubious other results in Dem-controlled states as well.

the law stands....he can’t do as he pleases...

I'm not so sure about that. The dims have demonstrated blatant disregard for laws and legal decisions even from SCOTUS. They are full of themselves and daring anyone to stop them.

“Question for Kentuckians: How did a Democrat get elected governor”

Matt Bevin was the GOP governor. Strong conservative beliefs, but a moron. He went to war against everyone in the state at once, including most of the GOP.

It would be 100% better if he chose a Democrat. Can you imagine the 3 Repukes the Repuke GOP elites would hand him? If he puts a Democrat then you can have a primary, pick a real candidate and win without someone you actually want. Unsettling the purely RINO incumbent is difficult.

“the governor cited the U.S. Constitution’s 17th Amendment passed in 1912, which states that the legislature ‘may empower the executive’ to make temporary appointments to fill a senate vacancy.”

Which does not mean the legislature must do it, as the governor apparently believes.

Senator McConnell could step down from the Republican Senate leadership but announce he will stay til the new senator is elected in 2014. That could thwart the governor of KY from appointing McConnell’s replacement.

he law stands....he can’t do as he pleases...this article is just a blog,,,

I always love when a FReeper will throw this excuse around.

Remember, the so-called MSM is full of liars, Marxist, and authors that are full-out willing to lie about conservatives, and even Republicans.

In many cases, its the Blogs telling the truth and the so-called MSM lying their asses off!
