I read a large biography of Hitler by Joachim C. Fest, and there was no mention of any trench incident that I recall.

Hitler was known to sleep in but the problem for the Germans was that Hitler believed the Normandy landings were a diversion and that Gen Patton would be leading the REAL landings at the Pas de Calais.
Even though Rommel had determined much earlier that Normandy would be the site for any invasion of France, Hitler never believed it and kept the armor further north where they could quickly get to Calais. By the time Hitler turned the armor loose for Normandy the panzer units had to fight their way to Normandy, not arriving in time to do much good.

All of the book is well documented footnoted and cross referenced with actual correspondence between hitler and various thugs who worked with him, and the reactions of the Prussian officer class who were very sorry they ever supported him. There would not have been the German Army derived Free Corps which became the Sturmabteilung (S.A.) Brownshirts which were put on a payroll from the German govt, and who numbered 2 million plus— who then stole away Communists (who outnumbered the NSDAP Nazis, and who had nearly identical political platforms. Labor and bread etc.) William Shirer examines Joseph Goebbels who was an ardent Bolshevik and advocated the Nazis and Communists (both Socialist Leftist groups) join together.
