Lukashenko: Goals of Russia's SMO met; future Ukraine will not dance to the tune of U.S. (Belarus publication)
eng.belta.by ^ | August 17, 2023 | Lukashenko, President of Belarus

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – The goals of the Russian special military operation have already been fulfilled and the future Ukraine will not dance to the tune of the United States, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Diana Panchenko, BelTA has learned.

The head of state was asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin told him under what circumstances he would consider the goals of Russia's SMO fulfilled.

"You know, we did not discuss the topic with him in this spirit, but I dare to express my position. The goals of the SMO have already been fulfilled. Ukraine will never be as aggressive towards Russia after the end of this war as it was before the war. Ukraine will be different. First, there will be people in power who are more cautious, smarter, more cunning, if you like. Intelligent people. Who will understand that the neighbors are given by God and that you need to build relations with them," the president said.

"I'm sure of it. The future Ukraine will not dance to the tune of the United States. This is my understanding. I am absolutely convinced that Putin thinks so too. I think that's how he understands the process. This is a big lesson not only for Ukraine but also for Russia. For us, for the whole world. That's a great lesson. We will learn from it. Russia will too," the Belarusian leader stressed.

Interesting perspective in the interview: "...that the neighbors are given by God and that you need to build relations with them."

Lukashenko is overdue for the Ceaucescu Treatment.

Ukraine will never be as aggressive towards Russia after the end of this war as it was before the war.

I don't recall Ukraine buying off Russian leaders, looting Russian treasuries, sending proxy armies to annexing Russian territory, holding sham elections, and then invading Russia. 🙄

I don’t see Ukrainians rushing to embrace Russians and Belarusians when this is over.

It seems like it is proceeding like the Iran - Iraq War.

It was a bloody stalemate in which we backed the losing side, Iraq. Although estimates vary widely, there were a few hundred thousand dead in that one. It was mainly an infantry war, although Iran seems to have had the better air force.

Eventually Saddam turned against us, although perhaps he thought he was entitled to Kuwait for services rendered.

Iraq won. Arguably. The Iranian armies were collapsing by 1988. Iraq got its original territories and a defensible line back. Iran had to abandon their offensive ambitions vs Iraq.

Iraqs original war aims, however, were foiled. They did not get Khuzestan.

The next step for Ukraine is the multi-year “peace process”. It takes a while to agree on the shape and size of the negotiating table.

In the end, I expect the line of control to be near where it is currently.

You are weirdly applying US manias and hatreds to European peoples. That’s a common error on FR, but still, it’s disappointing.

The DNC BTW is just a false front, a figurehead that decides nothing. In itself it is just symbolic. You have actual interests in the game, behind an array of organisations.

Very likely. However, I figure the line will be around Perekop.

Hence Ukraine will be in the EU.

I suspect the Belorussian people would like to be also.

“....Interesting perspective in the interview: ‘...that the neighbors are given by God and that you need to build relations with them.’....”

That is also a MAGA concept. Trump is all about making good relations with neighbors, especially enemies. He engages in trade practices in that manner. He has stated a good trade is when both parties win.

“..In the end, I expect the line of control to be near where it is currently...”

Yes, I agree. That is why Russia spent a heap of money building their main defensive line where it is. From what I’ve read, it is literally a linear fortress.

I just returned from a week at a mental health conference. No WiFi available. I see something about Belarus and Kaliningrad. Is something happening with that or was it old news? Site jumped away before I could look for a date. I hate my Chromebook!!

Not until/unless there is regime change in Kiev.

You're probably right.

1. There won't be anyone left in Uke to do any embracing -- they all left

2. Zelensky and his crew will be long gone by then -- living the high life in villas around the world with the gazillions they ripped off

3. The US and West, including Poland, will control the rump state, what's left of Ukieland, and they won't do any embracing, either

If the goals have been met, then they should have no problem turning around and taking their vodka breath home to mother Russia.

Google search for “Belarus Kaliningrad” shows that was a few weeks ago. Rumors of the inevitable that never come to pass abound in war.
