Maui fires are part of an intentional effort to rebuild the island into a “smart island.”

No, Hawaii fires weren’t set intentionally to turn Maui into a ‘smart island’

The wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, had killed 96 people as of Aug. 14, making it the deadliest U.S. blaze in the past 100 years.

Many social media users are spreading baseless conspiracy theories about the origin of the fires, which began Aug. 8, saying they were set intentionally by the government for nefarious reasons.

“Polifact” and “fact check” in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

see the “Wildfire Incidents for the 6 Main Hawaiian Islands” map about 70% down the page:

https://www.hawaiiwildfire.org/news-center/tag/Molokai

“According to the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, about 0.5% of Hawaii’s total land area burns annually, as much or more than the proportion of land are burned in any other US state. In Hawaii, 98% of wildfires are human caused.”

USA Today has put out a similar narrative, in the last 6 hours.

I don’t know what started the fires, but I know what DIDN’T start the fires: Global Warming!

“Following Maui’s unprecedented wildfire season in 2019, where more than 20,000 acres were burned....”

“Pacific Fire Exchange reporting reveals that as Hurricane Lane approached Maui Island on August 24, 2020, a fire of unknown origin broke out in the Kauaʻula Valley. This fire area burned approximately 1,835 acres. A second fire that same day....”

“...you’ve got a lot of vegetation and particularly grasses that have done nothing but grow and grow and grow very fast. But they go from green to yellow to brown pretty quickly and that is making us way more vulnerable to these big, destructive fires.”

“The idea of resorting to destructive measures, causing harm to a historic landmark and resulting in numerous fatalities, all in an attempt to transform Maui into a smart island, stretches the boundaries of my imagination," said Bui.

I bet this guy thinks Trump colluded with Russia in 2016, then tried to overturn the 2020 election, and that J6 was a genuine attempt at an insurrection, but the idea that the govt was behind the Maui fires “stretches the boundaries” of his imagination? 🤣

“by shutting down the power when the winds were strong”

People with lung disease depend on mains electricity to run oxygen concentrators.

Power should only be cut of as required by law (and executive order).

Lines might be tested for durability to say 100 mph wind force.

Because of a line repair that came undone, I went five days without power after Hurricane Ian hit my part of Florida.

“ Just the fact that they feel the need to deny it makes me suspect that that’s exactly what happened …..”

Exactly!
Just like the denial that COVID was created in a lab and anything out of the ordinary happened with the 2020 election.

Reminding me Giving me a reason why
I know that My goal is more than a thought
I’ll be there When I teach what I’ve been taught

You know we’ve told you before
But you didn’t hear us then
So you still question why
You didn’t listen again

Sweet memories I never thought it would be like this
Reminding me Just how close I came to missing
I know that This is the way for me to go
You’ll be there When you know what I know

So many social media myths propagated by twenty something transplants.

First, the fires were from 80mph winds downing power lines near the abandoned sugar fields. A smaller fire destroyed a subdivision in the uphill outskirts of Lahaina in 2018. Brush fires happen every week somewhere in the islands during the summer on the leeward sides.

All of the millionaires and billionaires live many miles away from Lahaina, which is a large figure 8 sized island about the size of Delaware. The police blocked a road during the fire because the road was in the middle of a huge fire itself and there were downed trees and poles all over the road.

Currently they are limiting access to allow only residents of West Maui (where Lahaina and 4 other resort areas are) in order to keep gawkers, TikTok idiots, and obsessed outsiders away from an active scene of charred DNA that still needs to be identified out of respect for families and loved ones.

Lahaina was until last week, by far the most touristy and commercialized town in Maui by a mile. It is a commercial waterfront downtown and slightly further out there are surrounding apartments and homes with asian immigrant hotel staff, locals, and white transplants alike.

Lahaina was until last week, known for having long lines to get into places like Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and Hard Rock Cafe. Lots of places selling tank tops that read “Hang Loose”. Also tour boats depart from there for whale watching and snorkeling..Hardly a sacred place full of Hawaiians, Mauai was the first island to turn predominantly white about 15 years ago.

Also The meetings are scientists having their annual conference in Kaanapali, close to Lahaina, and have been meeting for decades in the winter to use up their grant money, enjoy Maui, and talk about everything pertaining to chemistry, astronomy, technology, you name it. This year, they discussed “smart-cities” concepts like in huge cities like Singapore and Dubai, not in Maui, not in Lahaina.

There was another upcoming conference Mauai, but once again, they discussing other very large cities, not Mauai, but were going to really just have fun in Maui like everyone else who goes there.

Also keep in mind that people will now say whatever it takes to gain massive clicks so they can pick up a check from Zuck, Elon, or ChiCom for TikTok. That’s why every teenager and twenty something in Maui, instead of helping out, are blathering on about “it’s not what you think” “They are burning it all bc they stealing our sacred land from the natives blah blah barf barf”.

... but it was a disaster waiting to happen...

This is absolutely true. No amount of water pressure could have fought the firestorm once it hit the historic district, where most of the structures were very old wood construction. It was just a matter of time before the right conditions set the stage for this conflagration. The only thing that people could do at that point was to get out of the path of the fire.
