Vacant homes in Pennsylvania have been turned into drug dens by squatters who have even set indoor campfires to cook their meals.
State officials are ringing the alarm as they hope to demolish 10 empty homes that have been overtaken in the town of Jeanette, about 30 miles from Pittsburgh.
The 10 homes were declared public nuisances earlier this month; they all have had years of code violations property maintenance issues.
In one home on Fifth Street, squatters built a fire to cook cans of ravioli, according to fire chief Bill Frye.
Frye told Trib Live the home, which is boarded up, has served as a 'prime spot' for illegal activity.
'They actually were cooking with fire in the building,' Frye told the outlet. 'They had a fire inside the floor and were cooking Chef Boyardee raviolis.'
At a home on Third Street, playing kids left mounting trash behind that made the home inhospitable.
The officials want to use $10.4million from funds from the American Rescue Plan to demolish the homes; they are also considering dozens of other homes for dilapidation.
The 10 homeowners have been notified of the state's plans , and two of them received reprieves and are expected to figure out a plan for renovations.
Frye said he had difficulty even getting to the mail boxes of some of the homes to post the notices because they were in such poor condition.

I grew up right next to Jeannette. Ever since the glass factory burned down in the 1980s the town has never been the same and has been in constant decline. I haven’t been back for years, but I can’t say I’m surprised by this story.
At least it’s not Beefarino!

Apparently they never heard of Olive Garden...................
For 10 million you might be able to tear down the whole town. Might be a viable alternate solution.
