I don’t think you’re wrong, but I think another entity of the USA will be able to get him out of there.

And, I don’t think Russia would want to destroy any airfields as it’ll just be one more thing they might have to rebuild if they decide to move into Ukraine that far.

Lots of folks love to speculate on what Russia wants. No one really knows.
