Robbie Robertson, the Band’s guitarist and primary songwriter who penned “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” and many other beloved classics, died Wednesday at age 80.

Robertson’s management company confirmed the musician’s death. “Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine, and Delphine’s partner Kenny,” his longtime manager Jared Levine said in a statement. “In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support the building of their new cultural center.”

Garth Hudson is the only one still alive; ironically, the oldest. RIP Robbie Robertson.

Didn’t Roberson claim all of the bands songs legally and froze the others out from the royalties?

Controversial I guess. Leon claims Roberson didn’t write all the songs I guess.

In 1972, Juliana Werding had a hit song, Am Tag als Conny Kramer Starb (on the day that Conny Kramer died), which she sang to the tune of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." However, it was a far, far cry from the original tune. In Juliana's version, a girl watches helplessly as her boy friend becomes addicted to drugs and then proclaims that he can see heaven before succumbing to a fatal overdose.

Sigh. I never heard that one (and just saw it referenced while searching) but like most people, until my musical tastes expanded, I was only familiar with the Joan Baez version, which I hated liking it because I despised Joan Baez because of her Leftist political activism.

‘...I despised Joan Baez because of her Leftist political activism.’

yes, she willingly opened herself up or criticism by getting political, but that aside, I suggest finding her version of the old Irish folk tune The ‘Silkie of Shule Skerry..’

what a beautiful voice...

Yes. She had a beautiful voice. Why can't they just shut up and sing?

Joan Baez sings "Silkie of Shule Skerry"
