Well, I felt really badly about this. As I shared, I worked as a TV Tech / Director for the DNC Convention in Denver in 2008. As a conservative behind enemy lines, I had a few interesting experiences. The one with Gov Dukakis was kind of sad, and it was sort of my fault. He arrived on the last day where we moved to the new Invesco field stadium, for a long day of pundit interviews as everyone awaited B-HO for his big speech among the Greek pillars (gag). Anyway, Gov Dukakis was brought to our Host/camera set up on the noisy field, by our production coordinator. We were packed in, shoulder to shoulder with every other network imaginable. Gov Dukakis was with his wife, who was a lovely person in every way. I helped him put on his headphones, mic'ed him up, and sat him in the canvas chair. Since he was booked by the producer in New York, I wrongly assumed he was prepped and coached. After he was set up and settled in the chair, precisely next to the 2 hosts (who were also wearing headphones), we got our cue from the producers in New York that we were live. The hosts (2 unknowns from Al Jazeera) very politely introduced Gov Dukakis. The camera was a 3 shot, all in the same picture. Gov Dukakis heard their welcome on the headphones and wrongly assumed he was being interviewed by hosts, REMOTELY, IN NEW YORK! We didn't know this, right away, but quickly figured it out because he was not looking at our Hosts at all! The Producer was in my headset asking me, "why isn't he looking at our hosts?? What's wrong with him??" To my horror, and Gov Dukakis's wife's horror, we both realized he didn't know the two anchors were sitting right next to him! His wife and I frantically began pointing at the hosts seated to his left, but he completely ignored us!! He looked absolutely rude and imbecilic by not engaging with them, but it wasn't really his fault...and I should have made proper introductions. I often now wonder if that segment lives somewhere on YouTube now...it was terrible. At least his wife got a big laugh out of it.
