A woman has spoken out after her friend's two-year-old daughter was asked to cover up at a swimming pool.
Katie Sturino from New York City took to Instagram to share an anecdote from a friend who took her toddler for a swimming lesson.
The little girl was dressed in swimsuit bottoms when two lifeguards approached her mother and said that she must cover up, despite many of the other little boys at the pool also being half dressed.
The lifeguard told the mother that there was no nudity allowed by the pool, but Katie has criticized this logic and said that 'different rules for boys and girls start young and are reinforced constantly'.
Katie asked social media users for their opinions on the controversial topic, and many were enraged about the 'insane' approach to children.
The video, which attracted over 300,000 likes, revealed the details of the incident and Katie asked viewers whether toddler girls should have to cover up.
She said: 'I was just catching up with my friend, and she said that her two-year-old daughter was at her swim lessons yesterday and all the little boys around her were shirtless.
'Baby boys were shirtless in diapers and she was in... a swimsuit bottom and didn't have her rash guard on yet and the lifeguard came over.
'Two different lifeguards came over at two different times and said "ma'am you need to put a shirt on your daughter, there's no nudity allowed at the pool"'.
Katie quickly conveyed her anger at the lifeguard's comment and said: 'This is when they start policing our bodies.'
She added that this is when girls are told that there is something wrong with themselves, that they must cover up, and that women's bodies are not appropriate.

With the multitude of perverts out and about now I wouldn’t want my baby daughter to be in public half naked. These same people would freak out if pictures of their half naked daughter showed up on a porn site.
Little kids should be covered up. Not because of some idiot lifeguard; because harsh sun isn’t good for toddler skin. Are parents just stupid these days?
Mom could have simply said thank you, I’m in the process of putting on her shirt as we speak, but then she would not get enough social media attention.
Parents cannot demand trannies be clothed and or pools have rules to protect from pedos, then complain about the rules.
Best to start the social training early.
Bet they wouldn’t have complained if thee mother was topless as well..
Girls wearing clothes = “policing our bodies”
Boys wearing clothes = “just what you do. No one wants to see that”
Good point.
Meanng what?
“Nudity” and skin cancer are two different topics.
I was diagnosed with my first case before I was thirty.
Cover them up when they’re wee.
Both sexes.
Depends on the form of skin cancer.
Depends on the skin type. Me I was never covered up in summer always was tan, always in the water pool or ocean, only got a skin cancer on the back of my head in my 50’s
Tempest in a teapot for both sides.
In my case it was a combination of genes and bad burns I got in my teens.
This was back in the day before sunscreens were a thing.
Just cover ‘em up when they’re young.
The kids can always fry themselves when they move out.
she should have put her daughter in blue bottoms- they would have left her alone.
My daughters only wore bottoms in our backyard pool until they were around 3 or so. After that they wanted to wear a 1 or a 2 piece like mom.
I have never heard of a rash guard.
Pictures of me (wearing bottoms) at that child’s age at Galveston beach will never be revealed!
I first figured this story would’ve been about Muslims complaining that there were little girls and little boys swimming together!
My wife always wants to wear only bottoms in our backyard pool and that drives our now adult daughter bonkers.
“My wife always wants to wear only bottoms in our backyard pool and that drives our now adult daughter bonkers.”
Lol. My daughters would do likewise.
