ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 25-year-old missing boater was rescued Saturday morning 12 miles off the St. Augustine coast, the United States Coast Guard said.
The coast guard said it started searching for Charles Gregory late Thursday evening. He was last seen departing the Lighthouse Park boat ramp in a 12-foot Jon boat.

“A jon boat is not made for oceanic travel.......”
Wise words to be sure.
amd now one more person in the world is well aware of that.
Right! Goes out fishing all the time, but NO life jacket! “In ‘good spirits’ when he was found”???? Should have been ecstatic!
How much did the USCG spend on a thousand gallons of fuel for this little training event, and how many Coasties had to come home off liberty to look for this dork?
Back in the day I’ve been out in a 12 footer in the St. John’s river a few times.
Had at least one other person in the boat, paddles and flotation devices close at hand however.
Also, steered clear of the mouth of the river.
Once you get to Mayport you better be in something substantial.
I have however on rare very flat conditions seen kayaks and once a canoe out that far.......stupid cannot be fixed.
About once a year or so we have kayakers killed here by boaters that do not see them.
When I had my boat, a 17 ft center console, I nearly hit a PADDLE BOARDER that was LAYING DOWN on his paddle board sleeping!.................
Just sit right back
And you’ll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.......

Flotation devices, probably foam, under the seats. Not uncommon - the boat won’t sink as long as it’s not too heavily loaded. It was definitely swamped.
Agree the kid was lucky. He needs to go buy a lottery ticket....
Seriously!!!!
