ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 25-year-old missing boater was rescued Saturday morning 12 miles off the St. Augustine coast, the United States Coast Guard said.
The coast guard said it started searching for Charles Gregory late Thursday evening. He was last seen departing the Lighthouse Park boat ramp in a 12-foot Jon boat.

File that under what the heck were you thinking. SMH
Natural selection did not win that day. The guy is an idiot.
Sounds like suicide by Jon boat.
OTOH, perhaps he is a Wokester and believes reality is what he wants it to be. I hope his rescuers used his/her/he/she/they/it preferred pronouns.
Oh I don’t know. Had a buddy with a 12 foot Boston Whaler with a 25 hp outboard. He would take 2, 6 gallon tanks with him and off shore he would go till the first tank ran out empty. would fish all day and come back in on the second tank.
I’ve got a 14 acre pond that a 12’ Jon boat is just right for, what kind of an idiot would think that just because the ocean looks like glass when you launch it’s going to stay that way, especially in Florida in the summer? One pop up thunderstorm in the afternoon and you’re going swimming.
Where he put in is a protected body of water so he had to make the conscious (and dumbass) decision to go out in the open ocean.
A couple years ago two off duty Firefighters went out in a power boat and disappeared.
Air and boat crews spent six days fanning out to cover over 146,368 square miles — roughly the size of Montana and only found a couple of things off the boat.
Never found them OR the boat.
This kid was UNBELIEVABLY fortunate.
V hull makes all the difference than a flat bottomed skiff in the waves.
How much you wanna bet he’s at West Marine right now buying a life vest and some signaling devices?
“...last seen departing the Lighthouse Park boat ramp in a 12-foot Jon boat.”
Was he trying to commit suicide? Probably watched too much “Shark Week” stuff on Discovery Channel.
Oh I know, we use to call him crazy but he did it all the time, he died a happy man of old age.
A jon boat is not made for oceanic travel..................
I've seen Jon boats capsize near a pond bank for no other reason than a fisherman reaching for a beer from the cooler.
For Boston Whaler loves (I am one), here's a great video of the 15' (?) Black Top Legend taking on Haulover Inlet in Miami.
Oops. That was the Red Top Legend. The Black Top Legend is at the very beginning of the video (I started the video in the middle).

I used to have a 12’ Durocraft and a 6 hp Johnson . Dumbest thing I ever did on the4th largest lake in Texas.
The article mentions the boat was full of water but didn’t sink. That reminds of a fishing trip many moons ago in Ontario at Lac Seul. People staying at camp could bring their own boats and follow along to the camp. One gent had a big Jon boat with maybe a 90HP motor. Somehow they were able to pull it ashore to drain it after a day of fishing. The next morning he and his fishing buddy pushed it back into the water without the drain plug inserted. It filled up rather quick. Some astute person threw them a 5 gallon fish gut bucket to bail it out.
My Dad and I used to fish out of there all the time. In an 18 ft v hull with an 85 horse motor. The current in the inlet can be incredibly strong. That kid is lucky to be alive.
He needs to give up boating and take up knitting
25 Year old , living with Mom, goes fishing 3-4 times a week. “has been on the water his whole life.” Goes out to sea in a 12 foot boat. Hm.
