I’m a huge Dan fan but I actually like some of their other albums more, The Royal Scam, Can’t Buy A Thrill, Pretzel Logic are, to me, just as good or better than Aja

They went through many musicians to find their sound in the studio. They pickiness is legendary. The Royal Scam is my favorite of all their albums. Kid Charlemagne is a masterpiece, imho.

Sure, it might not generally be considered the greatest of all time
It's way up there, though. When I was a kid, I didn't appreciate the music nearly enough, though every stereo store I used to go to when I was setting up a system for my parents used to use Aja as a demo disc.
As an adult, I was finally able to appreciate the craftsmanship Becker and Fagen put into the music, the lyrics, everything. The title track even has Wayne Shorter playing sax! There's not a single bad track on it - from the opening notes of 'Black Cow' to the beauty of 'Aja' to the funk of 'Peg'. Great, great album - let's not detract from it by saying it is not generally considered the greatest of all time. It is by most who've heard it.

I most definitely like the Steely Dan sound - kind of a gentle rock/blues sound, touch of jazz. Just a good mix of things.

My favorite SD song is “King of The World” that closes Countdown To Ecstasy.

There’s not an ounce of fat on that entire album. Not one note, not one lyric that didn’t HAVE to be there.
The only criticism I could possibly have is that it clocked in at just under 40 minutes. But if there was any other song, no mater how great it could be, Bodhisattva, Black Friday, or Chain Lightning, it wouldn’t have fit and unbalanced the entire album.
Not that familiar with Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors (not really in my wheelhouse), but, in my opinion, as close as you’ll come to the perfect album.

Probably as close to a “love song” as you were going to get with Steely Dan, should have been a huge hit for them IMHO, one of the best pedal steel solos ever from the Skunkster

At the time, I definitely didn’t appreciate Steely Dan. But one of my kids was listening to my ‘oldies’ and she loved them...now I’m hooked too!
