Chicago Bears legend Steve McMichael, who has ALS, was admitted to the intensive care unit in Illinois on Thursday night with sepsis and pneumonia, his wife Misty McMichael said on Friday.
“Prayers for Mongo,” a graphic on his wife’s Instagram read with a caption: “We were admitted last night to the ICU at Silver Cross with Sepsis and pneumonia.”
According to his family, McMichael, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, is now awake after he was unconscious when he was admitted to the hospital. “I think those prayers have kept him alive and the Hall of Fame hope, that dream is still alive, all that together is keeping him here with us,” his wife said about the community support for McMichael.

Sorry to see this. Member of the ‘86 Superbowl XX Bears. A great player and a great all-around athlete. I hadn’t heard that he had ALS. I hope he gets better.
McMichael was a great player. ALS is such an awful disease.
“I hadn’t heard that he had ALS. I hope he gets better.”
ALS is a terminal illness and there is no “better.” They might be able to overcome the current issues or ease the symptoms as the ALS continues to its fatal conclusion. I hate this for anyone as I lost a fellow ham radio enthusiast friend to this awful disease a few years ago.
That is NOT a good diagnosis.
He has a battle ahead of him.
Great guy, albeit a little ‘crazy’. I met him in college. One of my roommates was also from Freer, Texas.
Hang in there , Mongo!
I know it’s a terminal illness, I was just hoping he would improve enough to be able to go home.
Prayers for McMichael and his family.
Work on potential treatments continues:

My roommate had a couple of dates with him at UT!! Yes, super nice guy. I remember going to Jack-in-the-Box around 1 am one night and he ordered about 5 hamburgers and 3 fries for a mid-night snack! We told him that we didn’t want anything to eat and he said that he didn’t order us anything!!!
He isn’t getting better. ALS is horrid. I honestly believe the prayers should be for him to die peacefully in his sleep tonight.
Sepsis almost took me out. Luckily I was already in the hospital so they got it and the only damage was from near lethal fever. I got over pretty quick. I remember walking laps with another patient with two of those IV rollers and six IV bags going in to both of my arms.
I pray for this guy.
I loved the Bad News Bears (was born and raised in Chicagoland) and the 1985 Superbowl team was wonderful. They did one of the earliest videos, the Bears Super Bowl Shuffle, and I loved the team and coach Mike Ditka. I retired to FL, and I believe Mike Ditka lives here in FL somewhere. Fond memories of that team and those fun years (we had a big Superbowl party at my place to watch the game).
Lol. That sounds about right.
Once, he was working on a car engine and was tired of waiting for the fan blade to stop, so he grabbed it with his hands. He ended up with dozens of stitches in his palms. Two days later, he was still bench pressing 300+ pounds.
He was an unstoppable force
Prayers for him.
