Big Ten Rumored To Be Adding Four Prominent Schools This Week (Clemson, FSU, Oregon, & Washington)

College expansion has been a wild ride over the past year or so, and it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon.

The Big Ten has spearheaded the movement. The storied conference adds USC and UCLA in 2024. It may not be done, either.

Barstool Sports' Jack McGuire is hearing a rumor that the Big Ten is adding four schools this week: Clemson, Florida State, Oregon and Washington.

That would poach two universities from the ACC - arguably its top-two athletics programs - and two from the Pac-12 - arguably its best as well, even with USC and UCLA in the mix.

Oregon and Washington have been rumored to the Big Ten for a while now, but the rumors died down recently. But Colorado's abrupt exit to the Big 12 has pretty much re-opened the door.

The expectation is that the Pac-12 is done for. Eventually, schools like Arizona, Arizona State and Utah will likely head to the Big 12. Oregon and Washington need a new home, and each belongs in the Big Ten.

Clemson and Florida State, meanwhile, probably make more sense for the SEC. But the Big Ten might want to enter the Florida recruiting market and tap into the Clemson roots.

Buckle up. It could be a busy week in college athletics.

An accurate headline would have said “The Big 10 + 4 seeks to become the Big 10 + 8.

Penn State started this idiocy when they joined the Big Ten in 1990. I was happy to see that move cost them a national title in 1994 when they were 11-0 and ranked #2 after the regular season, but didn't win the national championship because they were forced to play a 9-3 Oregon team in the Rose Bowl.

Nebraska was ranked #1 after the regular season, and beat #3 Miami in the Orange Bowl to hold onto the top spot in the rankings.

Goodness, I will. I hate both teams, and to have them play in the Big Ten would be disgusting.

Clemson to the Little 10 would be a major mistake on their part. If they want to leave the ACC, they should petition the SEC first. Maybe they have had talks with South Carolina and been told NO, maybe not. Clemson adds no market to the Big 10.

First time I’ve seen these teams named as possibilities.

I was bored a few years ago, so I came up with a way to restructure College Football.

Basically get rid of Conferences, and I came up with 11 divisions. Each division would consist of two-tiers. The “Power” tier, which mostly consists of the Power 5 teams, and the “Secondary” tier, which were the teams in the non-Power 5 conferences. The idea is that there will be one team from the Secondary Tier, that will play in the Power tier, based on a playoff game at the end of the season. That way I could assign all 130 Division I teams, and they would be geographically close.

Then with those 11 divisions, I would take the Top 2 teams in each division and they would make the playoffs.

The 11 division winners would get the first round bye, with the second-place teams playing each other, so we get to a Round of 16.

If Clemson and FSU leave the ACC, look for UNC and NC State to petition the SEC. Who else would the SEC want? Maybe OK St and Baylor? Maybe VA Tech and Duke? Who knows?

This is from a football prospective. Obviously other sports are affected should this take place.

I think Washington and Oregon are a foregone conclusion. Clemson and FSU would be a bit of a surprise (though Clemson, UNC, and UVA have long been rumored to be B1G targets).

This would hurt the SEC big time, IMO because if they were counting on the ACC falling apart and grabbing those 2 teams, they may be too late. The exposure and recruiting in the South for the B1G would be immeasurable. Where does the SEC go if this happens? Suddenly the B1G is ahead in the arms race and well ahead in the tv market map. B1G offers much more money than even the SEC. Money talks.

"Clemson adds no market to the Big 10."

I sort of agree - and the same can be said for Trailerhassee, but the fact that the B1G could get their foot in the door in the South - with these two teams - would be a major win. The OR/UDub markets would certainly be more profitable for the conference.

CO is going back to the Big 12. The Pac 10 is sort of falling apart.

I thought the Big 12 was toast, but they’re being really smart in going after the best of the rest.

Ain’t buying it. This is nothing more than idle speculation. In the case of Clemson and FSU, they are contractually obligated to the ACC until 2036. Breaking that contract would cost the schools neatly a billion dollars. The “story” also contradicts the results of the latest ACC meetings in Greensboro, in which UNC, Clemson, FSU and Miami agreed to new revenue sharing targets that would increase their takes.

I know about the GOR. FSU has been trying to escape it for a few years now.

Maybe the B1G has been more proactive in helping these schools get around it than the SEC - even if it costs a bunch of money.

I don’t know. The PAC teams are a given. FSU and Clemson would surprise me. But I was caught off guard by USC and UCLA, so...
