We find the following important dispatches in the Richmond papers of the 23d instant. It is well to bear in mind that they come from BEAUREGARD:

CHARLESTON, Saturday, July 18.

The Ironsides, five Monitors, and five gun and mortar-boats, assisted by two land batteries mounting five guns, have fired furiously at Fort Wagner all day. One of our gun-carriages was dismounted.

G.T. BEAUREGARD.

CHARLESTON, Sunday, July 19.

After a furious bombardment of eleven hours, the enemy assaulted battery Wagner desperately and repeatedly. Our people fought desperately and repulsed the attack with great slaughter. Gur loss was relatively light, but includes many valuable officers. Brig.-Gen. TALIAFIERO commanded on our side.

G.T. BEAUREGARD.

CHARLESTON, Wednesday, July 22.

The enemy commenced shelling again, yesterday, with but few casualties on our side. We had, in the battle of the 18th inst., about 150 killed and wounded. The loss of the enemy, including prisoners, was about 2,000. Nearly 800 were buried under a flag of truce.

Col. PUTNAM, Acting Brigadier-General, and Col. SHAW, commanding the negro regiment, were killed.

G.T. BEAUREGARD, General.

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Thursday, July 23.

Charleston dates of the 19th inst, state that For Wagner still holds out; that the Yankees had been surprised on Folly Island, and had to retreat to Morris Island, and that the iron-clads and other Yankees craft continued to bombard Fort Wagner.

THE LATEST NATIONAL ACCOUNTS.

The United States steamer Circassian, Commander W.B. EATON, arrived at Fortress Monroe on the 21st inst. from Charleston and Wilmington. She left Charleston on the 19th. A general engagement was just commencing as she left. Gen. GILMORE had erected a masked battery in the woods, quite near Fort Wagner, and expressed no doubt but that the attack by himself and Admiral DAHLGREN would prove successful.

Went out to Morris Island a couple of times several years ago. I had friends that lived on James Island, and were into the Civil War and battlefield preservation. One of them took me out to the island on two separate occasions when I was visiting. Had a dolphin accompany us part of the way. My friends dropped me off at a different end each time, and I walked the whole length of the island. Nothing is left of Fort Wagner. It’s all underwater. Both times I had the island to myself, and the weather was great. A while back some developer was looking to build on the island, but thankfully that got squashed before it could go anywhere.

Letters on Current Events – 7

The letter about Meade seems similar to the claims about McCain’s eligibility back in 2008.
