Why Did Russia Give Away Crimea Sixty Years Ago?
Wilson Center ^ | Mark Kramer

“Khrushchev saw the transfer as a way of fortifying and perpetuating Soviet control over Ukraine now that the civil war had finally been won. Some 860,000 ethnic Russians would be joining the already large Russian minority in Ukraine.” “The transfer of Crimea to the UkrSSR also was politically useful for Khrushchev as he sought to firm up the support he needed in his ongoing power struggle with Soviet Prime Minister Georgii Malenkov, who had initially emerged as the preeminent leader in the USSR in 1953 after Joseph Stalin’s death.”

Khrushchev was Stalin’s man in Ukraine. He needed all the support he could get to prevail in the power struggle after Stalin’ death.

Communist Khrushchev stole Crimea and gave it away

If you are anti-communist you would support giving Crimea back to Russia

“Ukraine has been killing them since 2014.”

Russians have been killing Ukrainians for a lot longer.

In the Soviet Union, it really didn’t matter, Moscow called all the shots anyway.

It’s Eastern Europe. Everybody has abused everybody - but the least “abused” are Russians at the hands of Ukrainians.

Prior to 1991 there was no “Russia”. There was the USSR. The USSR ceded territory to Ukraine and Russia subsequently recognized the 1954 border.

The Russians are therefore invaders and they can leave or they can die. Either is acceptable.

“Or we could just let the majority Russians living under Russian rule in Donbas and Crimea live in peace,”

You mean like the peace they had there before the Russians (and I mean from Russia) manufactured a rebellion against Ukraine?

Ironically, the lead Russian who started the armed “rebellion” is now under arrest in Russia for “extremist” views.

All the artillery strikes and the banning of them using their own language between 2014 and 2022 says otherwise

Maybe the CIA should not have overthrown the legitimate government of Ukraine in 2014

From 1921 until 1954 Crimea was part of the RSFSR, the part of the USSR that became today’s Russia. For most of that period it was a Crimean Tatar autonomous region within the RSFSR, not part of Ukraine.

Irrelevant. Russia has no right to anything that came before it existed.

“Maybe the CIA should not have overthrown the legitimate government of Ukraine in 2014”

Maybe the legitimate government of Ukraine should have sided with Ukrainians and not Russians in 2014.

No, they don’t. 1) If you’re a rebel you might be killed for rebelling. We would do the same and don’t doubt it for a second. 2) There were no language bans until the invasion of 2014. And the first restrictions were really promotions of Ukrainian usage like the parliamentary law in 2019.

If Mexico invaded the U.S., would you oppose some restrictions on Spanish usage as opposed to English usage? California kept up a WWI ban on high-school German into the 1920s and in 1941 banned it in churches. BANNED A LANGUAGE IN CHURCHES.

I don’t think you know as much as you think you do.

Or we could just let the majority Russians living under Russian rule in Donbas and Crimea live in peace, not have a world war and leave well enough alone in those other countries.

But the Russians and the minority in Donbas. Perhaps Crimea, if the Russians were willing to leave the rest of Ukraine.

That should have read: But the Russians are the minority in Donbas.

That’s why Russia is doing a “special operation.”

Crimea in 1954 had a Tatar plurality.

Ukraine since 1925 was a de jure, though not de facto, independent state. That WAS legal fiction, but legal nonetheless. Oh and Russia was not independent of the USSR neither de jure nor de facto.

Crimea was part of the Ukrainian SSR from 1954.

In 1991, 54% of Crimea citizens voted to be part of the de facto and de jure independent Ukraine. The Russian federation became independent of the USSR a few months LATER.

The territorial integrity of Ukraine was attested to and sworn credence to, by the Russian federation in 1994.

This was ratified by the Russian federation in 2004.

In 2014, Crimea had been part of Ukraine for 70 years.

If you want to talk about citizens choice it is clear that a slim majority of 54% did not want to join the Russian federation.
If you want to talk historical precedence, the 70 years Ukraine, 170 years Tsarist empire and 350 years Tatar khanate.

They have not controlled Crimea for 500 years.

At best you could argue from 1700 to 1783 as a vassal dom.

But then if you consider length of control as reasons for handing over control then I suppose you agree with handing over Texas and Florida to Spain?

Russification of the peoples the Tsar conquered had been in full flow since the 1880s. Thus abated a bit during the first decade of the USSR but then resumed.

If the USSR hadn’t broken up then by now the Ukrainian language like Belarusian, would have become like Welsh.

In fact, as I have pointed out before, before 2014 the Ukrainians I met in Poland were pretty meh about Ukrainian identity. This changed slightly with Putin’s first invasion in 2014, but when Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022, that really cemented Ukrainian identity.

If Putin had just used soft power then, conceivably by 2040 Ukraine would have merged with Russia.

No, Ukraine has not been killing them. That’s false, Putin propaganda.
