While hundreds of thousands of actors and screenwriters are currently out of work amid the Hollywood shutdown, those outside of the industry may be wondering if there’s anything they can do to help.
Unions representing actors (Screen Actors Guild of America) and writers (Writers Guild of America) are on strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) broke down.
Their demands include an increase in base pay and streaming residuals, plus assurances that their work will not be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).
Although there isn’t a magic wand to immediately fix the key issues SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are facing, there are some things you can do to support them in their fight for a fair deal.
Should you cancel your streaming subscriptions?
The first thought that might come to mind is to cancel your streaming service subscriptions. However, it would actually be “more supportive if you did the exact opposite”, actor Dave Wallace tweeted.
“Neither the Writers’ Guild nor SAG-AFTRA is calling for a consumer boycott right now,” WGA board member Adam Conover said.
So, instead, the best way you can lend your support is by “posting on social media. Boost our message, say you stand with us”.
“Follow our strike rules,” Conover added. “Do not do the work of a striking writer or actor. That’s called scabbing.”
Can I still go to the cinema?
Neil Gaiman answered this question on his Tumblr after someone asked if it would be “crossing the picket line” to see Barbie in cinemas.
“Continuing to see your movies, watch your shows, stream your favourites is one of the best ways to support the WGA and SAG-AFTRA right now,” the Good Omens author wrote. “This content has been made, and it makes money...

LOL! Yeah, I support their strike too. May they have the courage to make it last a long time.
I’m going to donate all of my savings to Kevin Hart and The Rock.
They must be going through such Hell now.
Probably turning tricks on Crenshaw for Ramen noodles…
Luckily all of our Vets are already getting the help they need.
If only....
That I could fully support.
I’m down with the struggle. I say we stay on strike for as long as it takes! One year, ten years, I don’t care. It’s time to stick it to the man!
One thing I can say in defense of human screene writers is that they wear their ideology on their sleeve.
It is easy (at least to me) to spot their Leftist posturing and their attempts to indoctrinate the viewer.
An Artificial Intelligence writer may be able to find ways to indoctrinate the viewer in ways that are far more subtle virtually, subliminal indoctrinatin.
I’ll keep my human brain washer thank you..
The Hollywood management say this could be the death of Hollywood. I sure hope so.
Anything good they did was in the past and (thanks to technology) mostly still available. What have they done for us lately.
YES!! STRIKE FOREVER!!
Actors are tone deaf entertainment whores. As long as they make films portraying life as a pointless exercise of immorality, depression and devoid of God, I hope they go the way of the dinosaur. Not sure what else they are qualified to do.
>> Probably turning tricks on Crenshaw for Ramen noodles…
That’s hilarious!
>> Luckily all of our Vets are already getting the help they need.
The sarcasm in that underscores a national travesty. Another travesty is what the Jao Beiden administration is DOING to our ACTIVE military.
“What have they done for us lately”
They insult us.
They push sexual deviance.
They push interracial relationships on white women.
The replace white characters with non whites.
They fund Democrats.
They push girl power that will get women raped and murdered.
They push abortion.
They say they’re feminists, then they get casting couch’d.
Etc.
It truly angers me so I say smartass comments so my head doesn’t explode…
Support their strike by never watching.
I won’t know what to do until I see a film telling me again, how to feel.
I do too, it's like gallows humor but for your rage and anger.
Excellent post, EE!
I’m glad someone else gets it.
Thank you. I should log off as all posts will be subpar in comparison.
:)
A truly conservative person will have difficulty supporting either side.
I plan to plagiarize it (if not outright thievery)
