Glen tells the story that when John Wayne asked him to appear in True Grit he told John he had never acted before and didn’t know how to act. John responded, “Awww, I’ll pull you through it”.
He ruined the entire movie. I took my girlfriend to this movie as she thought Campbell hung the moon.
His “acting” was so bad I could not help but say so. SHE then dropped me like a hot rock.
It is as Siskel and Ebert said years ago.
“The early movie makers were raised on great books and made movies of great books.
“Today’s movie makers were raised on Comic Books.”
That seems to be an accurate assessment.
Duvall played Lucky Ned Pepper in the original, not Chaney.
I agree. I love Glen but his acting was so bad for such a large role that it really brought the film down a notch.
The original was better due to the lead characters having likeable/interesting personalities. The remake was very flat.
When I was a young teen, my cousin and her young husband took me to see the film in a nice theatre in Little Rock. They were proud that Glen Campbell was from Arkansas and that the film was set in Arkansas and Oklahoma
Kim Darby was too dry after having her double swim the horse across the river. It wouldn’t have cost anything to spray some water on her and keep her dirtier in the subsequent scenes.
Campbell’s “too much gun” fired smokeless blanks. It wouldn’t have broken the bank to have put some 90-grain black powder loads in the big rifle and made each shot a real blast. They should have used black powder blanks in all the weapons.
The book is great and so is the original film. The remake had grit and grime but it just didn’t work as well as a film.
I like the piano part.

#3 The remake was all mumbles by Jeff Bridges
Practically a word for word remake of the best except Bridges mumbled the lines. I guess he thought he was Marlon Brando.
He was going to win an oscar no matter what just so the democrats could try to erase John Wayne.
John Wayne’s version is still the better of the two by far.
