John Wayne did a better job as Rooster Cogburn than Jeff Bridges. Also, Robert Duvall was a better Matt Cheney than Josh Brolin. In favor of the 2010 movie, Hallee Steinfeld and Matt Damon were better in their respective roles than Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Hallee Steinfeld did not have the Scots-Irish “look” that you would associate with the character but she captured the personality better than Kim Darby. Neither movie was shot near the actual location of the novel: Arkansas and Oklahoma, with the 1969 version having outdoor scenes in the Colorado mountains and the 2010 version in New Mexico and Texas. A slight edge to the 2010 version.
