I see many Republican candidates proudly exclaim the importance of USA being the strong leader of the free world.
I'm curious what that means for today, and why that is important. What values is USA promoting in other countries in the world. Which examples of successes do we have to show from this role as a leader in the past 20 years.
Maybe I'm too ignorant about all the many nuances of the international scene. Can someone explain what this means and why it is important?

Yes, Reagan marks a real turning point. Bush Sr. gave away Reagan’s Cold War victory when he should have capitizalized on it to help Russia transition, to turn our focus onto China, Iran, India, etc.

Yes, because the USA is the only country on the planet that holds individual rights as paramount, above that of the collective. End of story. Individual rights ARE in the best interests of the collective.
The rest of the world limits ‘rights’ based on the shifting will of the collective.
As an immigrant it took me a while to reduce it down to this simple fact. I think many Americans aren’t really aware either.
From the 1950’s to Reagan I now have to ask what was a lie and what was true. For eight years we were trying to be that shinning city on a hill, but beneath the roaches of the US deep state and both political parties were leaving a trail of filth and lies. When Reagan left you are correct it started into a quick downward spiral. The Republican party was and is just as corrupt at the Democrat party. Between the Bush’s, Clinton’s and Obama they promoted the worst of the worst in the US government.
Both parties have destroyed our institutions and faith in our system of government. The Democrats intentionally and the Republicans, well I have to say they are too damn stupid to do anything intentionally except betray their voters, that they have down to a science, otherwise they truly are idiots with more money than sense.
We are no longer the leaders of the free world but after the covid reign of terror one can legitimately ask IS THERE A FREE WORLD? So-called democracies went totally Soviet and continue to destroy democracy and freedoms that were a mainstay of Western civilization.
