Oceans of hot water play significant role in extreme global heat

The heat is on, as middle July is climatologically the hottest time of year. Nationally, the core of the heat will be in the Southwest into early next week, with temperatures consistently 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit higher their normally hot midsummer levels.

While much of the Middle Atlantic and the Southwest had a relatively cool interlude last month, it was the warmest June on record globally. A big reason was the exceedingly warm oceans, as they cover about 70 percent of the planet’s surface.

In the eastern Gulf of Mexico, which is already warm to begin with, water around the Florida Keys has been in the lower to middle 90s for much of the last week, about 5 to 6 degrees F higher than normal. Away from tropical waters, the differences are also striking, with about 2 million square miles of the North Atlantic Ocean at least 2 to 3 degrees F higher than normal.

"To reduce pollution, a new agreement from the International Maritime Organization went into effect at the start of 2020, limiting the sulfur content in the fuel oil used by the ships.

When that fuel is burned, the ships emit sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which reflects sunlight back into space. Unlike carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide lasts only a few weeks in the atmosphere. With the new fuel rules in place for a few years now, the amount of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere has dropped dramatically over the heavily traveled shipping lanes of the North Atlantic.

All else being equal, this suggests more sunlight reaching the ocean, yielding a net warming. While there is probably some level of impact, its magnitude remains an open question and a topic for more research."

Wait...WHUT? They reduced the sulfur content in ship fuel and now THAT is causing warmer oceans?

Can ANYTHING save us from OURSELVES? *SMIRK*

We need a new term for these people. They are like your aunt who thinks she is sick all the time, a hypochondriac. If you are going to take your temperature, and get MRI scans, test for genetic abnormalities and drive your Doctor nuts you may be a hypochondriac. It is the same thing with global climate.

How about Gaiachondriac?

Embedded in all the hysterical news are interesting tidbits.... Here's one.

"Temperatures were near to cooler than average across parts of the southeastern U.S., Greenland, eastern Europe, central and southern Asia, Australia and Antarctica. Sea surface temperatures were near to below average over parts of the central-eastern and southeastern Pacific and the northwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Source: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/monthly-report/global/202305

Oddly such tidbits don't find their way into the "heated" headlines....

The green crap is everywhere! I just had some good waffles from a mix my wife bought at a local store. Turns out they are "Climate Saving Waffles"! I kid you not. They were very good, but turned my stomach with their positioning and promotion. They use all the buzz words from the company name ("Snacktivist") to "climate smart" to "regenerative" and "woman owned." You just cannot get away from this crap.

It's ironic that they chose the most wasteful packaging possible for their "green" product -- a heavy waterproof bag with the built-in zip-lock resealable top. A simple, lightweight clear plastic bag with a twist-tie is a LOT more environment-friendly. This is something I see all the time -- the more "environmentally-friendly" a product, the more wasteful packaging they use.

What they’re really hiding is the immense amount of fly-ash from chinese coal-fired power plants that are seeding clouds over the north pacific and changing weather patterns.

So we get a super solar array backed up by wind turbines to power a super large cooling system to lower the temperature of the surface water and BINGO we cool the earth and there is the end of global warming. All rapped up in a neat bow. 😀

Everyone that lives near an ocean needs to make an extra tray of ice cubes each morning, and throw them in!

That’ll fix this ‘problem’ in no time. ;)

A few months ago reports were that there was unusual activity on the sun’s surface. There was no mention on how it would affect the earth’s temp.

There is a super volcano on the ocean floor in the North Atlantic that is increasingly leaking hot gases. One reason for increased water temp in that region.
