Police in Panama seized more than six tonnes of shark fins bound for Asia on Thursday (Jul 13), arresting five people in connection to the illegal trade, authorities said.
The black-market shark fin trade is estimated to be worth US$500 million annually, and Panama last year spearheaded international efforts to protect many endangered shark species.
Attorney General Javier Caraballo told a press conference that most of the seized fins "were already dehydrated and ready to be exported". The shark fins were allegedly destined for Asia, police said, where a kilo of fins can cost up to US$1,000.

They cut the fins off and throw the shark back in the water. Disgusting stupid industry for stupid people.
Agreed. And how many do they have to kill to get six tons of fins?
This just in- An illegal shark fin was found inside the whitehouse next to a cocaine package
It must be a lot.
There will soon be a population collapse in china if they can no longer obtain shark fin or rhinoscerous horn, they have no natural means to get it up
Why do they not harvest the whole fish? Soupfin sharks provide some of the better-tasting shark meat.
That’s a crime against nature and should be punished the same as a crime against humanity, nothing less.
Many of the large animals on the Endangered Species List are there because of the sexual insecurities and superstitions of Asian men. Also because Asians will eat anything they can subdue long enough to cram in their mouths.
Switch to Thousand Year Eggs.
“And make sure they’re fresh”—woman in Flower Drum Song to vendor.
Shark steaks are good, they should harvest the rest of the meat.
20 bucks says they will never find the owner of the shark fin. 😀😁😆😊
Sharks are the universe’s ultimate trash fish. They are not really edible, they attack humans in water, and they consume some gargantuan quantity of ordinary fish that would otherwise be available for humans. The “balance of nature” would not miss them any more than it misses carnosaurs or terror birds.
The price per pound for the fins can be 10 to 100 times more than the rest of the meat.
If your boat can carry a limited amount of volume/weight, better to fill it with something that goes for $100/lb than $4/lb.
i prefer the legally traded fins from our biggest exporting state, i think it is georgia right?
but seriously i have some shark fins before they were banned in Taiwan long time ago. just carry them thru the customs. At the time they cared more about pork products in your bags than shark fins.
they kept well when dried. but hard to prepare correctly. I prefer the imitation shark fins nowadays anyway.
Gordan is a hypocrite for speaking out against shark fins while still using foie gras.
Lol nope, they wont
