The mother of a Seattle liquor store robber who was shot and killed by cops has demanded an apology after a mock tomb stone for her son was spotted in a precinct break room.
Damarius Butts, 19, was killed while fleeing a robbery at a downtown convenience store on April 20, 2017. He tried to steal beer, before officers chased him and exchanged gunfire.
But now, a video has captured a glimpse of a small gray mock tombstone on the shelf in the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct break room, with his name inscribed on it and the date he was killed.
The tombstone for Butts bore a clenched black fist. On the night of his death, he suffered 11 gunshot wounds and bled to death as officers waited outside.
Following an inquest in the aftermath, the police department cleared the officers and found the shooting justified.
Ann Butts is now demanding the police force apologize for their mock effigy.
The police department, however, have said they have 'no reason to believe it was placed as a 'trophy' or with any pejorative intent.'
Butts said, through her attorney La Rond Baker: 'I can't express how hurtful it was to learn that SPD endorsed joking about the killing of my son by displaying a fake tombstone with his name on it.

Damarius Butts
Ten brand new belly buttons
Sleeps with the fishes
I shan’t pay for it.
Crackers!
If they were Freepers, they were stupid, immature ones. A professional workplace should be neutral. What if the mom had come in as a victim of a violent crime and found that there? They can celebrate all they want off-duty and off the premises.
They did their job which was evidently justified. Displaying a tombstone at their workplace is extremely unprofessional in my opinion.
She Butts hurt
A quiet boy, too. Very, very quiet.
Damarius Butts
Fought cops over beer and lost
Dead in the gutter
Hi.
Damarius Butts
With a name like that he didn’t have a chance.
5.56mm
Great job, guys!
The Seattle cops should stick those on the wall by his tombstone.
LOL
Someone should have baked a tombstone cake!
“What do you want on your tombstone?”
Damarius was “tough” and
Bragged cops were bluffin
With liquor Butts fled
Was gunned down ‘til dead
His mom said “he didndunuffin!”

The fourth line needs work, but the fifth is priceless.
Damarius Butts was a robber
He knocked off a liquor store
But the cops caught up with this lowlife
And now he is no more.
A bullet was his score
Yeah, he was rotten to the core.
Love it!
I read the article.
The ‘tombstone’ was taken from a BLM memorial, according to the mother’s attorney.
It was NOT made by officers. There are numerous items adorning their ‘breakroom’.
Last time I looked, Butts wasn’t the only person killed by SPD over that 4-year period; I don’t see pattern behavior reflected in that room in that respect whatsoever.
Nothing nefarious. Bad taste? Depends. But no one would have known had the video not been released in party to other litigation against the department. It was there for who knows how long. I took a look at our shop the other day and was shocked at the old crap hanging around that I just don’t notice except on rare occasion.
I bet that was the case here, too.
I agree. Who wants to email this thread to them?
Although somehow I suspect they are FReepers
You can where she be less than pleased. She lost a fourth of her living. Now she is back to a welfare check, food stamps, and turning tricks. Damarius brought her half of what he stole and laid it at her feet or put it in her lap.
Agreed, if this happened it reflects on a poorly disciplined police force.
This is behaviour one would expect from a criminal street gang.
There's a shot Butts named Damarius
Whose life was short and precarious.
He's not with us now,
That we must allow,
But Butts's tale's in media quite various.
