High Point police say a black lab charged at the officer, and was shot and killed. The family says that isn't what happened.
A family in High Point is trying to wrap their heads around why their family dog was shot and killed by a police officer Sunday morning.
High Point police said on Sunday around 9:50 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of Homewood Avenue.
Police said a woman called about a German Shepherd in her yard that wouldn’t leave. That neighbor told WFMY News 2 that she has two children and a small dog and was scared to let them out with the German Shepherd roaming around outside.
Police said the officer wasn’t able to get close to the German Shepherd without it running away but was told that the dog belonged to someone down the street and went to the home to try to talk to the owner.
When the officer pulled up, police said a black Labrador (lab) came from behind the home and charged at the officer who ended up shooting and killing it.
Police said the officer shot the dog four times from about seven feet away.
Homeowner, Adam Barnes told WFMY News 2 that Hank, the 65-pound black lab, wouldn't hurt a fly and has never charged at anyone.
"The fact of the matter is, is that he didn't make a good decision and it cost our family our dog. And he was more than just a dog, he was a family member," Barnes continued, "we have lost one of our most prized possessions in the world."
Police said no one was in the yard or driveway at the time of the shooting.
The Barnes family said that isn't true.
High Point police said there will be an internal investigation.
The officer is not on administrative leave.
Sounds like self defense. Case closed.
go to any large public park, and I guarantee you will hear this same stupidity from an irresponsible dog owner.
So, that means all dogs charge? It was a lab.
Barney Fife shot a Lab
Good job idiot
Not all British law enforcement carry guns, but these do, and they didn't even shoot a dog that was actually out-of-control?
Dogs, Kids, innocent civilians, all justifiable cause... “just in case”...
There is no situation on God’s green Earth that the presence of a cop will not make worse.
I attribute most of these cases to affirmative action hires who have never owned or been around dogs.
When they see a black lab running at them they see a black bear charging. Most of us people with even a little dog knowledge would just take a knee and enjoy the lick fest.
I think the police academies should add a few hours of basic dog knowledge.
You know that, how? Because a cop said so?
“There is no situation on God’s green Earth that the presence of a cop will not make worse.”
Incontrovertable
I agree.
Never call them for help or talk to them at family reunions.
Fricken’ cousins.😡
Report is dog charged officer who shot it four times. If that is as reported, that is self-defense.
Quotes:
Proper restraint of dogs will prevent them from harming other animals, people or property, and from straying and getting lost or injured.
At home dog owners must control their dogs by voice, an electronic containment system, or keep them restrained by leash, fence or other enclosure. (San Diego County Code section 62.669; California Penal Code Section 597)
Away from home dog owners must restrain their dog using a hand-held leash no longer than six feet. The person holding the leash must be capable of controlling the dog.
In a motor vehicle you must safely protect your animal with a harness or other device that will prevent it from falling, being thrown or jumping from the vehicle.

Only dog that ever bit me was a lab. I was about 10 and riding my bike up the street past the owner's driveway, and the dog ran out and nailed me on the right hip before I even knew it was there. My dad spoke to the owner, and there was no more trouble from that dog. That was in the days before people sued each other over anything or nothing.
Anyway, even though labs tend to be less aggressive than a lot of other breeds, that doesn't guarantee that they'll never bite.
There is a reason why Black Labs are a top popular dog in the US. They love everybody and have the best temperament. I have a 115# British Black Lab. He’s a hand full and nothing but love.
Yes.
The dog probably barked at him which was scary to him or maybe annoying so he protected himself the only way he knew how. He was in fear for his life or maybe his hearing. Dogs bark as a warning to the intruder but also to alert their humans. Most dogs don’t bark a lot before attacking if they do attack. The cop did it to be mean because he could and would get away with it. The people who called the cops are just as responsible and are probably assholes.
Was the dog armed?
Cop reported. Of course he wouldn’t lie
