Just a day after Ridley’s op-ed ran, HBO temporarily pulled the film from streaming. There’s a deeper conversation to be had about how “Gone With the Wind“‘s racist depictions and white-supremacy-indulgent view of our nation’s past should be addressed today, which University of Chicago professor and Turner Classic Movies co-host Jacqueline Stewart goes into here.

It was such an astonishing production compared to all prior movies, and all these years later, there has not been a movie more visually stunning or with better use of color.
It was an epic movie about the old South, when many veterans of the War were still alive, and the War was not yet distant history. It was beloved by Yankee families as well.
It should be viewed in a theater, not on TV with commercials.
I think it is still the best movie ever made. Like all things excellent, it is under attack by despicable people posing as virtuous.
“My favorite, if anyone should care, is Doctor Zhivago.”
A heck of a movie.
Love the movie even more!
“Racist” is a liberal label for “anti-liberal”. So anything racist is great!
Agreed. All Revolutions are created by guys like Pasha/Strelnikov.
Depends. White dot, black dot or red dot?
Jaws is racist?, who knew.
(My favorite movie)
We get a lecture just before they start a movie on TV now ,what’s next ,LOL 2 things they created for Morons “Viewer Discretion Advised” and “Best Before Dates”
EXACTLY! As someone else posted above, this is someone telling me how to view this art.
The book and the movie are a depiction of Scarlett’s views on life during these times - PERIOD! Nothing more and nothing less.
This would be no different than people complaining the movie and history about the battle at the Alamo do not give enough credit to the Mexican Army and General Santa Anna. Very seldom is the story/movie written from the perspective of the Mexican Army or General Santa Anna.
As a matter of fact, like in America, some have started to put forth the idea that the main reason for the Texas Revolution was slavery! Of course, that completely ignores the fact that several Mexican States were in rebellion against Santa Anna’s dictatorship and his violations of the 1824 Mexican Constitution!
So what’s new with this crowd anyway? Being racist is racist.
Charlie:
They said you was hung.
Bart:
And they was right.
Who knew Song of the South was racist? I don’t see it that way.
Embrace racism?
I’ve never seen it...but probably should.
CNN is filled with anti-white racists among the worst of them.
Mine too!
Mine too!
My favorite is They Shall Not Grow Old. Just saw the other day that all the clips of soldiers waiting to go over the top was filmed on the first day of the Sommes, and they were part of the first wave. Amazing three of them survived the battle and the war. The cameraman, a corporal who wrote about the battle and an officer. Quite a haunting film.
I make sure that I purchase my favorite movies (or even movies that I just enjoy) on DVD ... that way I don’t have to worry about the idiots out there who don’t want it watched.
There goes all the Tarzan movies.
If a movie or tv show isn’t racist, homophobic, trannyphobic, sexist, fatphobic and misogynistic, it just ain’t no good.
