The CEO of woke tampon brand August has been criticized online for repeatedly using the word 'menstruators' instead of 'women' throughout an interview about period stigma.
During a CBS Mornings conversation with Gayle King on Thursday, 25-year-old Nadya Okamoto said she wanted her brand to be 'period positive' and 'proudly gender-inclusive' amid what she described as 'an age of transphobia'.
Clips of the interview shared online triggered an angry response from people on Twitter, who were quick to call Okamoto 'a clown' - while some women said they would not stand for being called 'menstruators'.
Okamoto's choice of words comes amid an ongoing storm over what some feminists say is the erasure of the word 'women' to appease a tiny minority of trans and non-binary people who also have periods.
Supporters of alternative words and phrases like 'menstruators' and 'bleeding people' say they boost inclusivity and show support for a vulnerable minority group. But critics warn they erase the female population, which has also famously suffered systemic discrimination.
Manhattan-born and Oregon-raised entrepreneur Okamoto took a year out of Harvard University aged 20 to launch a non-profit called PERIOD, which distributed sanitary products to homeless women - and which became a precursor to August.
On Thursday, the former Teen Vogue 21 Under 21 star spoke on CBS about her quest to end period stigma, which began when she was exposed to its pervasive effects among the homeless community as a 16-year-old living in Portland.
'Periods make human life possible, it's potentially one of the most natural biological processes of life, and yet history and society has built up this stigma that makes menstruators feel so ashamed,' she told King.
'It makes us feel like there's something wrong with our bodies. We're taught that period blood is this 'contaminable' disgusting thing.

Wow. Gonna really rake in the bucks!
“...’period positive’ and ‘proudly gender-inclusive’...”
Lordy, I can’t take anymore of that crap!
What century is she living in ???
Im 75 and my friends and I were never taught any such thing ...
Wheres those nice young men in their clean white coats to come and take her away HO HO ...
I think there could be a need created for their product by people who frequent Taco Bell.
Recently saw another anger inducing general news story with “and pregnant persons.” May have been about the Canadian airborne forest fire and burned plastic particles entering through our lungs.
Wonder if some “pregnant persons” are mostly or a little pregnant?
How many people don’t see this is nonsense?
Ain’t she special!
We all see the nonsense.
It offends the sensibilities of these idiots, to suggest that only women have periods, or that the only people who have menstrual cycles are women.
It offends their sensibilities to suggest that women get pregnant, and that by definition, someone who is pregnant is a woman.
Part of this nonsense, is the fear of the left people have. People are fearful of saying the wrong thing, being canceled or criticized for not being “inclusive” with all this transgender and gender bending business.
I’ve never quite figured out, why is there such fear of the left and the reaction of the left, to nonsense such as this talk of “menstruators”, and being afraid to say that women are the ones who menstruate, and that only women menstruate.
political correctness is a strong force in our culture.
The transvestite stance will not be a deciding factor in this company’s success, because it is women pushing this gender ideology nonsense, it’s all about feelings. The question is, will their product satisfy enough real women to continue their social campaign. If the product works, women will flock to it regardless of who they use for advertising.
“gender inclusive” tampons?
What?! Men do not menstruate, honey.
Get that through your thick woke skull.
I can’t take any more of this nonsense.
Tranny “women” (a.k.a. MEN) using tampons.
Have we reached Peak Insanity? If not we’re pretty darn close.
>> I can’t take any more of this nonsense.
I WON’T observe any of this nonsense and ignore it. I WILL speak the truth against it.
If enough of us do that, things will change.
There is the problem. The nice young men in their clean white coats have been outsourced to the LBJTVPRSNL++ mob.

Seems to me like a story of how this start up was funded would make interesting reading.

And he majored in politics at Princeton.
Note to August’s customers: Ladies, you’re being used. If you’re cool with that, so be it. If not, next time check out the people you do biz with first, eh?
