A golden retriever was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio and dramatic bodycam footage caught the controversial moment - as cries for the cop's firing from the bereaved family grow.
The July 2 shooting footage showed Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer shooting three-and-a-half-year-old Dixie and then leaving the dog dying on the sidewalk.
The dog ran up to the responding officer at a scene, and while it did not appear aggressive it was coming towards Palmer when he opened fire.
That sparked outrage from people who witnessed the killing of the dog and now family and social-media posters are calling for the officer's job.
'After she was shot one time in the street, he should have just let it go and let us get the dog and take her where she needed to be treated,' The dog's owner, Tammie Kerns, said to 3News, in tears.
'But he didn't do that. She was crawling — useless, helpless — in the street. He continued shooting her. She was trying to come to safety, and he just kept shooting her three more times after the first time,' she added.
The Lorain Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, assuring transparency and a thorough examination of the circumstances.
It's unclear if Palmer remains on-duty during the investigation. Dailymail.com has reached out to the Lorain Police Department but officials did not respond in time for this report.
The Kerns family has threatened legal action against the police department, demanding justice for Dixie.

c’mon rednecks, control your animals.
I am biting my tongue.
What the h-ll! Is this cop a psychopath? He needs to be an ex-cop soon.
It's certainly possible.
I’ve been a dog owner for 25 years and I’ve worked in an animal shelter. I can tell you that dog was not aggressive. That dog was going up to him to be petted.
Had this a K-9 officer he would have known this.
That cop was just being an asshole, in my opinion.
Exactly!!!
The dog was wagging his tail as he came toward the officer...h
He was NOT aggressive in the least....
He should be fired and sued for everything he has...
What an eff’n pussy scumbag.
Those cops are animals. A golden retriever would like them to death is all. Cops deserve their reputation. I used to support them even when a few go rouge. But all of them have gotten to big for their britches.
It doesn’t have to be this way with friendly dogs. Many years ago, we were driving to church on Sunday morning. A police car was stopped onthe bridge, and the policeman was trying to get the loose dog into his car. The dog was playful, but unwilling to get in the backseat like a common criminal. When the cop offered the front seat, he jumped right in. Problem solved. Good cop. Good dog.
Like? I mean lick.
Was the Golden packing heat? Possibly a bone shaped like a gun?
I feel sorry for any animal that has the misfortune to be OWNED by you....
Cops need to police their own. If they allow bad cops in their ranks, it is their fault. My dad was a career cop, 1960’s to 1990’s, and they got rid of the cowards, the bullies, and the abusive as fast as possible. A good police force is so valuable, a bad one is a blight on the community and leads to this kind of thing.
Shooting a dog like this is a cowardly thing, he should be shamed out of the job and not ever work as any authority again.
Agreed that dog was not showing signs of aggression, however for someone not familiar with dogs they could easily react to any animal coming at them as a threat.
Hope the dog wasn’t black.
Shooting in a neighborhood? Like a scene out of It’s A Wonderful Life where Bert was shooting down the street where people were walking.
He obviously couldn’t tell the dog was acting friendly or just didn’t care and wanted to assert his authority.
No, but likely trained in the protocol that as long as one is acting according to the letter of the law, versus its intent, then such actions will be considered justified. And or he was not trained in real life scenarios how to recognize an actual threat from a real one, and how to handle the latter from dogs (most at least) and even some humans without using weapons. And or was not in good physical and mental shape to so do.
